Analyst talks Pre sales smack, Palm delivers smackdown

September 30th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Palm Smackdown

If you’ll think back to Palm’s last quarterly conference call, they revealed that around 810,000 Pre phones had been sold. Now today despite the pleasant surprise in sales numbers that beat most estimations, one of those unruly analysts has reared his head and claimed that Palm is indeed not doing as well as we all thought. David Eller of Town Hall Research (whom we have heard from before) said in a recent note that Palm’s sales figures were inflated by reporting the number of units sold by Sprint plus those that Sprint shipped to third party resellers (e.g. Best Buy) instead of the actual number of activated units. Eller went on to say that “channel inventory is currently about 11 weeks, which we believe will pressure reorder rates and make it more difficult to sell high [average selling price] products going forward.”

Palm would have nothing of it, and in a response to John Paczkowski of Digital Daily said, “The sell-through data we post reflects carriers’ sales to their customers. For example, Sprint customers include consumers who buy in a Sprint store, and Sprint retail partners such as Best Buy and RadioShack. We rely on our wireless carriers to provide us with sell-through data, and we note this fact in our 10Q.”

Pre takes top spot on Amazon.com, constrains supply

September 30th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Amazon Sold Out

Say what you will about how many Pre phones Palm has or hasn’t sold, but they seem to be doing well on Amazon.com. Reader jpquezada pointed out to us that not only does the online mega-retailer list the Pre as the #1 bestselling smartphone (as of this writing), but Amazon also warns prospective buyers that the Pre will be "in stock on October 9, 2009," implying either a stock shortage or a complete sell out.

Considering that the Pre page itself says that the phone is in stock, it would seem to be the former implication (or possibly an error on Amazon’s part). Either way, that high ranking in the smartphone sales charts is more than likely spurred on by the fact that you can get the Pre for $99.99 through Amazon, saving a good $50 over more traditional outlets like Sprint itself.

webOS picking up steam in moble Web

September 30th 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

It looks like webOS is making some marked gains into the mobile Web — going from 0% to 4% in just under 5 months, which is substantial when considering Android  grew roughly the same amount over roughly the same time frame, and Nokia’s Symbian OS losing nearly 10% of it’s market share.

The Pre is also showing up in the top 10 handsets and smartphones in North America, ranking 7th and 4th, respectively.

The biggest player in the mobile Web is still Apple, of course, commanding 40% market share. With that statistic in mind, note that AdMob’s statistics don’t account for the iPod touch.

With new handsets announced, and new markets being opened up by Palm, it will be interesting to see if this pattern of rapid growth in the mobile Web by webOS will continue.  I have a sneaking suspicion that it will.

Thanks to everybody who sent this in! [GIGAOM via Admob]

Coreplayer Coming To The WebOS?

September 30th 2009 | Posted by Jason Robitaille

Coreplayer has been a longtime favourite of the PalmOS community (not to mention Windows Mobile and Symbian).  Its vast collection of codecs, expansive options, and quick speed have made it arguably one of the best video players for the PalmOS, and now it looks like we may be seeing Coreplayer, in some form, on the WebOS.

Not too long ago, on the CoreCodec Community Forums, while talking about a future 2.0 release, BetaBoy happened to mention:

If we do release it for Palm… it might be released as a ‘last time thank you’ for their support… but note that we are already migrating to the Pre’s WebOS. The other thing that why some Palm ppl might still want it on their older devices is the new touch UI.

Very welcome news given how limited the existing player is.  That one statement leaves lots of questions out there.  Thankfully, not to long ago, BetaBoy also paid our forums a visit and gave us a view at some of their plans for the WebOS:

You’ll likely see CorePlayer on the Pre before Android….. we all have Pre’s here now(if that gives you and indication of what we are doing). [...]

We are doing the same thing that we have always done… but mostly for our OEM customers with CorePlayer API for Linux…. utilize the CORE of CP in API form to fully integrate it into the WebOS UI. In other words we are playing nice and will not being using our CoreUI interface we use for all the other platforms we support.

On the hardware side of things… this is where I don’t want to say much atm, but we do plan to support the native codecs when ever possible, no diff then we do now for all our other platforms.

On the SDK… we are hopeful that with each release it matures and that Palm (like Android) has a nice roadmap for native apps…. and when its ready, so are we.

Hopefully we’ll see Coreplayer for the WebOS before the next generation Pre gets announced. Perhaps CoreCodec could consider homebrew for the early basic releases, similar to TCPMP before going fully retail.
