How To, Verizon, bugs, gps, mms
![]()
The thing about putting a phone on a new carrier – even if the hardware is virtually identical – is that there are always a handful of bugs that pop up. We have two from our forums that are looking something like confirmed. They aren’t critical, deal-breaking bugs, but they are a hassle.
First up, long-time member dutchtrumpet points us to this thread about Verizon MMS and the gist is this: when WiFi is on, MMS messages aren’t able to be sent. It looks as though the issue is that MMS message need to go through Verizon’s EVDO network, but the Pre Plus is attempting to send them over WiFi. This isn’t an issue for Sprint users thus far. The good news is that there is an easy workaround: just turn off WiFi before you attempt to send an MMS message.
The second bug is a little more worrying: it’s starting to look like there is a fairly serious issue with GPS on Verizon Palm Pre Plus devices. The concern is that full, tower-assisted AGPS is only working for VZ Navigator and not other apps. The Fear, with a capital F, is that Verizon is playing their lock-down shenanigans again, but from what we can tell in this thread that’s probably not the case, as Verizon Palm Pixi Plus apps are able to get quick GPS locks and also because Bell Pre phones are also having some hassles. A workaround that seems to help some comes from m0sim: open VZ Navigator (even if you haven’t purchased it on your plan) before using GPS on other apps. GPS is a finicky feature, so diagnosing exactly what’s happening here is going to take some time. The good news is that the massive and massively helpful PreCentral Forum community is on the case.
Either way, we’re looking forward to webOS 1.4 and hoping it’ll address these bugs.
AirTraffic, App Catalog, Audio Grenade, Drag Stats, Gossip Fix, Irish Recipes, Lexi-Comp, Lexi-Comp ON-HAND, Moo, New York M Baseball Fans, ScanCode, apps
The folks at Palm are screwing with my head, I swear. I open up the App Catalog this morning to see what’s new, and behold, there is new stuff listed under older. Again. I know this stuff wasn’t there yesterday, and being under older means it certainly wasn’t there night. No, these are apps from a parallel dimension. It’s the only plausible explanation. The thought had crossed my mind that maybe it was a glitch on Palm’s servers, but then I realized that the alternate dimension theory made much more sense. Seeing as this oddness is still comprised of new apps, it’s all listed after the time vortex-free break.
Epocrates, news
When Epocrates entered usability testing last month, there was a collective sigh of relief amongst the medical professional contingent that the highly useful (and sometimes even required) medical software would be making its way to their platform of choice in the form of a native application sooner rather than later. The company was mum on a specific update then, but a recent update to their website suggests that a release is imminent, saying that we’ll see availability in "early 2010".
webOS is only a few steps away from becoming a bona fide enterprise class platform, and the release of Epocrates and the full Documents to Go editing suite (and if our very own Jonathan Izor had his way, bluetooth keyboard support) may very well take it there.
Leverage, Palm Pre, camera, news, pre
EDIT: As the commenters have so astutely pointed out, I apparently need to get my eyes checked again. That’s an HTC Touch Dual. Mea culpa.
While more and more TV shows are learning that its simply easier to use the apps that come on smartphones, there are still some that insist on making a custom interface to accomplish simple tasks, like taking a picture. Leverage happens to be one of those shows, making fancy with the taking of pictures instead of just using the camera app that comes on the Palm Pre. But hey, making the phone look fancier than it is? Sure, that’s cool too.
Thanks to Mvsscooby for the tip!
