Tomorrow, Palm will cease to be an independent company and become a division of HP. Many have said that this is a failure of their new strategy surrounding webOS and their attempt to signal a rebirth of a company. I tend to disagree, to my eyes for the past few years Palm was essentially a startup company and achieved one of the two possible good outcomes for any startup: getting acquired by a larger company who sees tremendous value in your product and your people.
So Palm is dead, but Palm will live on within HP and I hope that the idea behind Palm will live on both inside HP. (Warning: bombast ahead.)

While we can’t know about any other carriers in other countries, customers of O2 in Germany have something to smile about, the "next Palm update" will "probably" come tomorrow morning. The update is minor, yes, but it should bring PDK apps to the Pixi and open up both the Pre and Pixi to ‘indie’ PDK apps like 3D games from smaller companies.
Can we just say that we love O2 Germany for how they sell unlocked devices, how they have supported webOS, and how well the communicate with their customers? Viel Erfolg!
Update: Arthur lets us know that some folks in our forums are reporting that the update has arrived. At 9 megs, it’s not a huge update.

In addition to waiving (and refunding) the $50 app submission fee, Palm is now offering the $99 fee to get a full developer access to submit to the app catalog free gratis. The fee had been waived back ‘for a limited time’ back in April and had also been free for open source apps - now that applies to everybody.
No word if, as with the $50 app fee, Palm will be refunding developers. Update: Actually, Palm never did charge that fee – change here is they aren’t planning on it in the future. Either way – the skids for getting apps into Palm’s app catalog are officially greased.

The “Switch Applications” advanced gesture allows you to quickly switch between your open cards without first going into card view. This is performed by completing a full-swipe from left-to-right or right-to-left across the entire length of the gesture area. For each swipe, it will move to the next open application in the direction of the swipe.
To activate this Advanced Gesture:
- Open the Screen & Lock app (
)
- Scroll Down to “Advanced Gestures” and turn “Switch Applications” to "On"
- Close the App

Palm is running a new ad, first spotted in CIO Magazine, which demonstrates how readily and efficiently webOS phones (both the Pre and Pixi) can be integrated into a business environment.
Palm Simplicity. It’s good business.
Mobile doesn’t have to mean complicated. Palm webOS phones integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange, so here’s no need for additional servers or middleware." [...] Learn more about how Palm can simplify your infrastructure at palm.com/simplify
which redirects to a page on business use on Palm’s site.
We at PreCentral have been making this business case for months, and are not sure why it has seemingly taken Palm this long to start doing so as well, but we’re pleased to see it. We’re certain that, with the HP acquisition reportedly closing (finally!) this week, and with HP’s longstanding focus on business (and its ongoing mentions of webOS’ place in that strategy), this message will be more frequently seen and heard in the near future.
