The Palm developer network has made available the first chapter of ”Palm webOS” by O’reilly Media. For those eager developers wanting to get a head start, this looks like a very interesting read.

The Mojo SDK for Palm’s WebOS is speculated to be based on the Dojo SDK a popular javascript toolkit for the web. Even though the SDK hasn’t been publicly released, you can still check out Dojo and get a feel for what kind of apps are possible for WebOS. Dojo Campus has a demo explorer with various demos as well as source code for each demo. The explorer itself is even written using Dojo. This should be enough to teeth on until a proper SDK is released.

Unfortunately, no matter how strong we cry that we want the Pre, or how many sites post speculations about its release date, it won’t come sooner. However, once it gets out, it is wise to be one of the first customers to get their hands on it and love it for life, isn’t it? Yesterday, Sprint announced that its “Sprint Premier” customers will be able to get cool phones (such as the Pre) before the others.

While the iPhone already has a wealth of useful/cool apps, the upcoming Palm Pre has maybe a handful. Not to worry though. In the spirit of other similar events, BarCamp, SuperHappyDevHouse, and MacHack, and the original iPhoneDevCamp, some smart folks have put together preDevCamp. The goal is to get developers, designers and testers together to create new apps for the Pre as well as port existing linux and web based apps to the webOS platform. Registration is based on geographical location so this aims to be a worldwide event. The event is planned for the week after the Palm Pre is released. According to the latest news on the Web, Palm’s next-generation Pre mobile phone is reported to come with another interesting feature that would make it a little more valuable than Nokia’s smartphones or even Apple’s iPhone. What we are talking about is the Pre’s capability to take picture after picture with its 3 megapixel camera.

 

The handset allows for the pictures to be taken either using the onscreen shutter, or the QWERTY’s spacebar key. In addition to that, it can snap photos fast enough to capture stills so as to be able to create stop motion animation of the subject. This would be an impressive feature of the webOS, although it hasn’t been talked about until now.

 

As you probably already know, smartphones like the Nokia Nseries or even the iPhone would need a lot of time to snap a picture and then process it. That action could take up to almost five seconds in some cases, which means that the handset needs this time to get ready for the next shot. In between the exposures, a lot of other pictures could be lost, so having a device that can take photos faster would be a great thing. 

 

If Palm manages to keep this feature in the webOS even after the platform is upgraded from the beta version, then Apple and Nokia would really have a strong competitor out on the market. Surely, anyone that is confident in Pre’s future is entitled to be so. Palm seems to have managed to make a nice step forward with both the handset and its operating system.
