We know not everyone is interested in Palm or iPhone, so let’s look at some Android phones. Here is one very cheap HTC Aria deal that you don’t want to miss from online authorized AT&T dealers. Unlike many retail stores, you won’t need to file rebate claims. All discounts and rebates are instantly applied to [...]

HP has been selling Palm phones through its recently created wireless central online sales portal since it went live a few weeks ago, and the company is looking to sweeten the deal on already free-on-contract AT&T Palm phones by giving a $50 gift card, reedeamable on HP.com, with the purchase of any new Pre or Pixi Plus.

AT&T, Pre Plus, Verizon, Woz, Wozniak, iPhone, news, pre
Henk van Ess, who describes himself as a "a Dutch born investigative journalist and accidental entrepreneur" who sells MiFi cellular WiFi access points, recently took an order from Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple) himself. After verifying that it was the real Woz, van Ess started an e-mail conversation with Woz about the iPhone 4 and other issues, and received permission to post the conversation on his site.
While Woz is always interesting, of particular importance to our community was his suggestions for how iPhone 4 users can deal with the unreliability of the AT&T data network:
If you can afford it, carry a second Verizon phone for backup. Another option is to carry a Verizon mifi and rely on Skype on your iPhone. I have used this mifi technique to rescue my own, and others’, iPhones on occasion. If you buy a Verizon Palm Pre, you get free mifi on it so that is possible the best ‘compromise’ solution, to carry a Verizon Palm Pre along with your AT&T iPhone 4.
Woz continues that he has a Pre (Plus) with Verizon, and notes that "[a]t first [Verizon] charged but then they made free a built-in mifi ability (Mobile Hotspot)."
It’s great to know that Steve Wozniak is a member of our community, and we encourage him to explore his Pre Plus; it has a lot more to offer than just a free Wi-Fi connection!

While Germany’s O2 is the only carrier to officially offer the webOS 1.4.5 upgrade to its customers, and AT&T owners will probably be the last to receive it, a self-proclaimed “Sprint employee” tells the PreCentral forum that webOS 1.4.5.1 will be available from Sprint on July 7th after most European carriers will have already made [...]

More than anything else we find ourselves clamoring for new hardware from Palm. The Pre and Pre Plus are getting to be incredibly long in the tooth (the base hardware was revealed more than 18 months ago). We all knew that something new had to be coming, and at the developers webinar hosted by AT&T today, Palm let it slip that new stuff is on the way. Asked if there were plans to release new devices this year, Palm’s rep said:
“I’m not allowed to talk about future roadmaps, especially because we’re in the process of being acquired by HP, so I can’t say. But yes we have a road map. We are working on future devices. And [a] new version of the OS. So I think, you’re going to find the next year very exciting.”
Very exciting indeed. Watching what’s been coming out of Apple, HTC, and even Motoroa, we’re aching for new hardware in webOS land. Of course, “the next year” means that we have a approximate twelve-month timeframe in which to be excited, though our hope is that the excitement can be spread out over the entire period instead of one big pop. That said, he did say devices, not device, so hopefully the next year will bring more than one or two new launches.
One of those spread-out excitements we hope to see at some point is Flash. While all the delays have made us more than a bit jaded, the tip we got from sepherous isn’t helping. After asking about the continuing delays with getting Flash onto web-friendly webOS, the response boiled down to Palm simply not being able to say what the hold up is.
Update: for completeness’ sake, here’s Palm’s official statement on Flash:
‘Adobe and Palm continue to work together to bring Flash Player 10.1 to WebOS as quickly as possible. At present, the integration work between the Player and WebOS is undergoing extensive testing to ensure we deliver a high quality implementation.’
The full video of the webinar is due to be posted on AT&T’s developer site sometime in the mystical next week. Until then, we’ll just savor the transcripted bit and dream of a brighter future.

AT&T, Amazon, Pre Plus, att pre plus, news, palm pre plus
While we can argue about the merits of subsidized phone contracts until we’re blue in the face, we can’t argue this: Amazon Wireless has the AT&T Palm Pre Plus on sale for $0.01. Sure, that’s one copper-plated zinc core Lincoln away from being free, but we’re sure you can find more than enough coinage buried between the couch cushions to cover this expense. Of course, you’ll still need to dig up plenty more coins to cover the cost of AT&T’s new data plans, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
If you’re already on an AT&T plan and looking to upgrade, Amazon Wireless will hook up with a Pre Plus for $49.99 in upgrade pricing, but as with the once cent Pre Plus, you’re going to be signing a new two year contract to get that deal. We don’t know how long this pricing is going to last, but we do admit that it got down to one cent awfully darn quick. In the meantime, Amazon Wireless is offering free activation on AT&T phones and free two-day shipping on all phones. If you’ve been waiting to jump on the AT&T bandwagon, we don’t see a better time than now coming up. Unless you’re holding out for free.

Beginning to intermediate webOS developers are getting a jump start courtesy of AT&T, which has secured Josh Marinacci from Palm’s Developer Relations, for a webinar scheduled to air on 6/17, 10-11am PST. What’s more, the attendees of “An Introduction to Palm webOS” are being enticed with a raffle for an AT&T smartphone.

AT&T, PDK, Pixi, news, webOS 1.4.5
![]()
We’ve previously confirmed that webOS 1.4.5 is imminent and its primary purpose is to clean up how PDK apps (ex. native 3D games) work - basically they will be ‘jailed’ and no longer able to run roughshod over the entire OS. We also expect that 1.4.5 will finally bring 3D gaming to the Pixi.
That’s what we all knew, now an anonymous tipster sends word: carrier testing is nearly finished – one carrier is requesting a small bugfix and another carrier is waiting a bit before accepting it. That 2nd carrier: AT&T. Apparently the idea of releasing a webOS update so soon after launch gives them the willies. Whatever the reason, webOS owners on AT&T are going to have to wait a little while before they’re up on the new hotness – a pain point especially for in-the-know Pixi Plus buyers on Big Blue.
The former (unnamed) carrier’s bugfix is pushing 1.4.5 back a little bit, so if you were wondering what happened to that "Late May or Early June" timeline that developers heard about exactly one month ago, now you know.
Lastly, this 1.4.5 update looks to be the last before the big push for the next update we heard so much about at Palm’s developer day. That update is still slated for the Fall and should bring significant changes to the underpinnings of the OS for speed as well as APIs for the microphone, camera, and much more. Get all the details on that future version of webOS here.

AT&T, GSM, RadioShack, news, palm pre plus
After recently discontinuing sales of the Sprint Palm Pre, Radioshack’s shelves will be stocked once more with a webOS powered device with the AT&T Palm Pre Plus. The company has started sales of the device for at the very reasonable price of $49.99 with a new 2-year contract, both online though radioshackwireless.com and through its retail locations nationwide. Shipping is free when ordered online, and most stores we called (in the Portland Metro area, for what it’s worth) either had stock of the phone or could quickly procure them.

If you are a webOS developer (or would like to be), AT&T has an upcoming webinar for you. “An Introduction to Palm webOS,” featuring Josh Marinacci of Palm’s Developer Relations team, will be happening on Thursday, June 17, from 10-11 a.m. Pacific time:
From beginners to developers with intermediate knowledge of mobile development, this session will benefit anyone looking to build a new mobile application or those interested in easily porting existing mobile applications to a new platform for greater distribution.
In addition to learning about webOS development, attendees may also enter to win an AT&T smartphone (one would hope they’d choose the Pre Plus or Pixi Plus!).
More details and signup information are available on the AT&T Developer Program Web site. Kudos to AT&T for its support of webOS development, and we look forward to hearing feedback from those who participate in the webinar.
