Move calendar entries between accounts

With Synergy on webOS, you can bring multiple calendars from various sources together and display them all at once, show only certain calendars, or focus on just a single calendar. You can even have more than one calendar for a single source (e.g. multiple personal or shared Google calendars). However, each calendar appointment can only be tied to a single calendar account, which is initially set to your Default Calendar (as determined in the Calendar's "Preferences & Accounts"). So what happens if you want to create your calendar entry in a different account, or if you want to move an existing entry from one account to another? Simple. Just open up the calendar entry, click on the button in the top right of the screen that indicates the current Calendar account (the "PALM" button in the screenshot above), and select the calendar you want to move the entry to. Once selected, the header of the entry will change colors to match the color of that Calendar Account.

Note that all of your calendars may not be shown in the selection drop-down. Only those calendar you have edit-access to will be available.

Set Calendar View Options

Synergy is an extremely powerful tool, allowing you to collect and display your calendars from multiple sources in a single view. However, what happens if you don't want some of your calendars to always display by default, or if you want to change what calendars you see, depending on the day or your location? Luckily, webOS allows you to easily customize your calendar views or decide to just focus on a single calendar.

To choose which calendars show by default (i.e. "All calendars" view):

When viewing your calendar, just tap on the button in the top right (the "ALL" button in the screenshot to the right), scroll down to the bottom and select "Calendar View Options"
Or, fr om within the Calendar App, swipe down from the top-left corner to bring down the Calendar Application dropdown menu, select "Preferences & Accounts", and scroll down to the bottom and tap the "Calendar View Options" button.
On the Calendar View Options page, scroll through all you calendars and determine which ones should "Display in All Calendars View"

Note that some calendars may not be turned off

If you only ever want to display a single calendar, regardless if it's included in the "All Calendar view", use that same dropdown from the top-right in the calendar to choose the desired calendar or "All calendars"

webOS Exhibition Mode Preview

One of the top tier features for webOS 2.0 is Exhibition - a feature that allows your device to display the app of your choice when it's set down on the Touchstone for charging. Unfortunately, it's not ready yet (it's coming in that OTA update), but we did just get a quick preview at the Palm Developer Day here in New York.

Basically when you set your Pre down on the Touchstone your Exhibition app Zooms in from the distance with a very cool animation. At that point it's just running, displaying whatever information you'd like it to. Palm recommends you don't clutter up your Exhibition mode with multiple screens from your app - keep it simple. Palm also recommends you use a snazzy horizontal scroll-in animation that's almost Windows Phone-eque in how it handles moving text around the screen.

The basic interaction is that you have your app taking up the full screen, hiding the status bar. There is a semi-transparent black bar on the top that displays the time - you can tap or swipe down from the top of the device to switch between different Exhibition modes. There is also another semi-transparent bar at the bottom for showing notifications. Finally, there will be an Exhibition Preferences App where you can choose your default Exhibition mode and also configure which other modes will be in your drop-down selection list when you're in Exhibition.

Palm showed a simple clock, an Agenda view, and a photo slideshow. There was also the beginnings of a Facebook Exhibition mode, but it doesn't look fully baked yet.

Speaking of not fully baked - Exhibition itself isn't, this was just an early preview. The interface may change a bit before launch, so don't go judging just yet. Now that we've laid down the caveats, head on after the break for the gallery of slides!

Round Table: HP webOS 2.0

Welcome to Round Table, which is in fact not a table at all. Round Table is a continuing series on PreCentral where we pose a question to the staff and they provide their thoughts and insights. The question could be something simple like “what’s your favorite use for the Pre’s mirror?” or something a bit more complicated, like “why are you sticking with webOS (or are you)?” Or maybe we’ll just end up discussing our sandwich workflow. Today, however, we’re diving into the latest version of webOS. While few have been able to handle webOS 2.0, the veritable cornucopia of videos, screenshots, and reviews have made it easy to draw some preliminary conclusions. Calendar: Agenda view and Search (Homebrew)

Welcome to "Homebrew Week" for PreCentral's Tip of the day. We will be focusing on some simple Homebrew apps, patches or hacks that will help you add some key functionality to your phone. No advanced knowledge is necessary, as long as you know how to use webOS Quick Install and Preware.

One of the most requested features of webOS has got to be more "at a glance" information, including an agenda view of your Calendar data, as well as an ability to search your calendar. Unfortunately, due to security limitations of webOS, third-party apps are only allowed to see and modify calendar entries that the app initially created, severely limiting the ability to create any kind of calendar-type app. Fortunately, homebrew apps and patches have access to same APIs that the stock webOS apps use, but as a result will never be available in the App Catalog. Keep reading after the break for a few simply Homebrew solutions to gain access to some at-a-glace and calendar search options.

Pimlical update brings Google Calendar sync to Windows

The name Pimlico has long been associated with Palm OS software, and while they haven’t yet released a webOS app, they have released an update to their Pimlical calendar sync for Windows. The update brings Google Calendar sync to Windows, which you can then sync to your webOS phone. Pimlical duplicates a lot of the functionality and interface of the Palm OS classic DateBk (no coincidence, also a Pimlico product). As an added bonus, if you haven’t yet figured out a way, Pimlical gives users an upgrade path from the old school Palm Desktop calendar databases to modern ICS files which you can then get into Google Calendar.

Delete a calendar event

Do you use your webOS phone to manage your calendar, but can't seem to figure out how to delete an event you already created. Maybe you tried to swipe to delete the event, but that doesn't work in the calendar. Instead, you can follow one of these two options:

From the daily view of the calendar, press and hold the Option (Orange/Silver) key and tap on a calendar entry, and then press "Delete" in the pop-up to confirm
Tap on the calendar entry to open it up, swipe down from the top left corner of the screen to get the Calendar Application drop-down menu, choose "Delete Event," and then press "Delete" to confirm

Jump to a specific day in the calendar

When you first load up the calendar app you are initially taken to the current date, but what happens if you want to jump to a specific day, or return to the current day? You can manually scroll through each day (by swiping left/right in daily or weekly view, or up/down in monthly view), but there is a much easier way. While you are in your calendar, you can either swipe down from the top left corner of the screen to get the Calendar Application drop-down menu and select "Jump to..." or you can click on the date header at the top of the Calendar (e.g. "Today, Tue Aug 24" in the background in the screenshot) to load up the "Jump to..." pop-up. From here, just select a specific day, month, and year you want and choose "Go To Date", or select "Go To Today" to jump to the current day.

Another way to quickly jump back to the current day is to tap the Daily View icon () at the bottom of the calendar screen while already is Daily View. If you are in weekly or monthly view, you would need to tap that icon twice to return to the current day

Tab between fields using the keyboard

Do you miss the ability to "tab" between fields using a D-Pad or would just like to be able to move between fields using the keyboard? You actually have this ability by pressing Shift () and Enter () at the same time, but note that this does not universally work throughout webOS. In fact, it appears to work only in some of the stock webOS apps, and only for text-entry fields (i.e. no drop-downs). Here are the apps that it does appear to work in:

Messaging: When sending a new message, switches between the "To:" address bar and the "Enter message here..." area
Email: When sending a new email, switches between the "To:" address bar (and the "CC:" and "BCC:" areas if shown), the "Subject", and the Body of the email.
Calendar: When editing a calendar entry, switches between the "Name" of the event, "Event Location", and "Event notes"
Tasks: When editing a task, switches between the "Name" of the task and "Task notes"
Know of any other apps this will work in?

Review: YPmobile

When Palm and AT&T are touting the coolness of YPmobile on the new AT&T Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, we’ve came to realize that it’s the exact same app you can already find in the App Catalog. In fact, we’re disappointed in ourselves for skipping over the app so many times, simply because of the name that conjured up images of super-thick books full of phone numbers and really bad ads on thin yellow paper. The free YPmobile app for webOS couldn’t be further from the yellow-paged days of yore, and that’s a good thing.
