Quick App: AppScoop!

January 13th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

It’s only been a few days since Palm opened the proverbial flood gates of Apps with the launch of their new web distribution program at CES this year, and a lively ecosystem is already beginning to sprout up around it: We have our own App Catalog viewer in glorious beta form here at PreCentral, we know that Preware will soon be able to tap in to the app feeds provided by Palm, and now the very first on-device web only app viewer has gone live in the official App Catalog. AppScoop! (free) allows for the viewing of all of the non-reviewed web only applications (all 17 of them, at this point). Tapping on one of the listed apps allows you to read descriptions, view thumbnails, and even install the application directly to your phone just like Palm’s own ProjectAppetite demo allows you to do.

It’s pretty impressive to see an application like this appear in Palm’s official app store, and I think that the rollout of their distribution program in earnest hasn’t been on the radar of the media as much as it should be thus far – it’s a pretty big deal indeed.

New in the App Catalog for 07 January 2010

January 8th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

App CatalogSo yesterday might have been a big day at CES 2010 for Palm. We got the Palm Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus, and they’re going to be exclusive to Verizon. We got the Pre headed to SFR in France. We got Flash, a webOS App Gallery on PreCentral, video recording, and webOS 1.4. But what’s exciting, and what we get right now, is new apps. And those new apps come with 3D gaming, ala the iPhone. In fact, Palm’s new Plug-in Development Kit allows developers to make C and C++ apps that will work beautifully on webOS. As such, developers like EA, Gameloft, and Glu are here and showing off what that delicious hardware is really capable of. Curious what games are available? Well, while you’re waiting for the App Catalog to load, we recommend you hope right past the break and catch a glimpse for yourself of our daily list.

You’ve read the liveblog, you’ve commented on all the articles, but there’s just something to be said for having been there to watch it all happen. Sadly, we don’t have a time machine big enough to fit all of you, so this will have to do. This, being a the full video of Palm’s presentation today at CES. Smartphone Experts at CES: Podcast

January 7th 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

Since the entire SPE team was here at CES in Las Vegas, it made perfect sense to take some time away from ogling gadgets and chatting up our friends in the blogosphere to record a podcast. We talk up what we’ve seen so far, including the Nexus One and Motorola Backflip; we also chatted a bit about what we’re hoping to see at Palm’s event today.

As you might have guessed, the show was recorded and hosted by our pal Mickey Papillon of TCPJ. Give it a listen!

Palm’s CES 2010 presentation is tomorrow, PreCentral will be there

January 6th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Jon Rubinstein

We may have gotten a hint or two of what Palm will be announcing tomorrow, but we get the feeling that new carriers aren’t all that we’ll be seeing. With that in mind, our very own Dieter has made the trek out to Las Vegas (which oddly is warmer than Florida right now) to drop in on the unsuspecting Consumer Electronics Show 2010.

It’s all going down at 2 PM Eastern (11 AM Pacific), and we’ll be giving you some hot live blogging action to get the news to you as it breaks. So tune back here tomorrow and as soon as we know what’s happening, you’ll know.

The Palm Pre …Minus (Knockoffs)

January 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Cool K07

Over what the Palm Pre has right now, this sucker’s got a front-facing camera in addition to the one with flash on the back, dual SIM card slots, Java functions, a full QWERT keyboard, FM radio with recording, analog TV, eBook support, handwriting input, and a 3800 mAh battery.

And that’s just the stuff we’ve heard of before, it also comes with revolutionary technology like a gravity inducer, something amazing called “Magic Voice,” a TransFlash card slot supporting up to 8 GB, handshaking function (to avoid H1N1 transmission, we presume), a ‘spotwatch,’ and four common games. That last bit has our minds thoroughly blown: we always put four common games at the top of our must-have list. Strangely, Touchstone support seems to be missing, as is webOS; it must be some sort of marketing mix-up (like a Sprint Pixi with Wi-Fi)

We know, you’re sincerely hoping that this is what Jon Rubinstein is going to pull out of his pocket on stage come Thursday. Want one now? The Cool K07 can be yours for a cool $128, with bulk pricing available if you want to buy one for all your cool friends too.

ChangeWave report shows Palm mindshare slipping, Android gaining

January 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Mindshare Chart

Looks like the pundits may have been right on this one, as the latest smartphone survey from ChangeWave shows that Android’s mindshare has surged in the last quarter, with 21% of potential customers eyeing Android as their future platform of choice. In September 2009’s survey, Android was tied at 6% with webOS. In the past three months, new releases like the Motorola Droid have catapulted Android’s mindshare over Palm, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry, leaving only the iPhone in its sights.

So what about Palm? According to ChangeWave’s numbers, Palm’s potential buyers were cut in half to just 3% of respondents. Windows Mobile and iPhone also dropped, but their losses were 33% and 13% respectively.

The operative word here is "Ouch." We’ll break down a few more numbers after the break.

Pink Pixi on Sprint reaffirmed

January 4th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Pink Palm Pixi

In case there was any doubt that Sprint thinks they’re getting a pink Palm Pixi, Engadget has corroborated the buy back inventory screen we saw early last month with a shot of their own. Needless to say, there’s not much here we haven’t already seen, but we do anticipate that we might be hearing something about this at CES, even if it’s just a press release.

Pre lands on “Best of 2009″ lists galore

December 31st 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Palm PreObviously we’re going to be the types to tell you that the Palm Pre is one of – if not the – best smartphones of 2009. This is PreCentral, after all. But we’re not alone in out praise of the first webOS phone, as it has landed on several of those year-end “best of” lists that every website is obligated to put out. Since we only have two phones to choose from, our best webOS smartphones of 2009 list would be awfully short, so instead we’re going to give you an overview of how the Pre has landed on best of lists elsewhere on the web. We’ve got the round-up, waiting for you after the break.

Unreal Engine 3 Ported to iPhone/iPod Touch, webOS Next Please

December 27th 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

AnandTech is reporting that Epic Games have ported their Unreal Engine 3 game engine that powers games like Gears of Wars 2 over to the iPhone 3GS and the third generation iPod Touch.  The demonstration given to AnandTech consisted of a rather impressive fly through and playable Unreal Tournament level, and in practice "works well".

This is great news for mobile gaming in general, and it looks like the iPhone isn’t going to be the only platform rocking UE3 next year: Epic will be announcing support for "another platform" at CES in January.  There are a number of mobile platforms that are likely candidates for a port of the engine, and while we’d love to see webOS on that list, as of right now it doesn’t look likely.

The engine requires that devices have an Open GL ES 2.0 equipped GPU, which both the Pre and the Pixi have, but lacking in webOS is an officially sanctioned way to write programs in anything other than JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

Unless Palm announces a major shift in how folks can develop for webOS at their CES 2010 presentation, webOS is out.
