Foxconn and Compal contracted for 5-6 Palm devices in 2011 [rumor]

 Palm device mock-ups

While the Palm Pre 2 might be eliciting less-than-impressed responses from Palm fans, we can’t help but wonder what Palm might come out with next. It’s all but assumed that the Pre 2 was the phone Palm had in the pipeline and that it was supposed to be out several months ago, but what’s not all that clear is what’s due next.

According to Chinese trade paper CENS.com’s "industry sources," Foxconn Technology and Compal Communications have landed contracts with Palm to produces several new devices. Foxconn is said to have secured the contract for four or five devices, including the PalmPad, while Compal has picked up the contract for one more device. Additionally, all five (or six) devices are due for production and presumably sale in 2011.

If this is true, consider our minds scrambled. That leaves us wondering just what devices we could see if up to six different form factors hit the shelves next year. There’s obviously the tablet, but what else there might be is unclear. Options include portrait and landscape sliders, a keyboard-less slate device, the candy bar Pixi form factor, and… something else to make six? Here’s hoping Palm can take some inspiration from our amazingly talented members.

HP has made it clear that they’re intending to invest major dollars into making Palm a successful company, and when you spend $1.2 billion on something, you generally want to make sure you get your money’s worth. Multiple devices hitting the market in the span of a year is one way to get attention, and hopefully rake in some profits.

We’re also taking some comfort from CENS.com’s use of Palm as the contracting company, not HP. It’s a comforting notion that these would be Palm handsets (or tablets (or toasters)) and not HP branded, calming our fears of the Palm brand fading away anytime soon.

AT&T Pre Plus for free from Wirefly

May 20th 2010 | Posted by Adam Carr

Hold on to your seat folks, because if Amazon’s deal wasn’t good enough for you, then this one sure will. Credit goes to RMB, who posted in the forums that the Pre Plus can be had for free here on AT&T From Wirefly, less then a day after officially launching for $149.95 with a bundled touchstone charging dock. The Deal from Wirefly does seems to be location specific so if you are contemplating on getting a Pre Plus on AT&T, then this seems to a good time as any to do it, just be sure to enter your Zip code beforehand to see if you are eligible for the offer. All in all, a very good deal, which should hopefully lead to more sales, and more webOS devices is always a good thing, right?

Thanks to RMB in the forums!

Bell adds tethering to their plans

March 14th 2010 | Posted by Jason Robitaille

Tethering has always been a bit of a touchy subject both officially from carriers and even in our forums. The legalities are sketchy for most. Thankfully, for Canadian Pre users, things got a bit easier.

Recently, we’re not sure of the specific date, all of Bell Mobility’s smartphone plans changed. Now, every smartphone data plan has tethering added. For example, the $50 plan now says,

"500 MB of data for personal email, Internet browsing, instant messaging, and tethering"

Pricing goes up from there, with the largest plan at $100 offering a 3GB monthly allotment.  However, as it says, the data amount is shared, so tethering Canadians will need to be aware of bandwith used.

With that in mind, it’s worth reminding fellow Canadians that the homebrew app Netstat is amazing for keeping track of bandwidth used. As for tethering apps, the most convenient one is the paid app MyTether, and lately we’ve been hearing successful stories of Bell users using the free Mobile Hotspot.

Since legality is becoming less of an issue for tethering, it’s not surprising there are rumblings others may be creating competing tethering apps as well.

So Canada! Your Pre is Native Now!

August 27th 2009 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

In Canada? Waiting in line?  Already got your Pre? Giddy as a schoolgirl? Feeling the sting of a brand new 3 year contract? Is that contract offsetting the joy of not having to hassle with a mail-in rebate? We really, really want to know because we’re happy for our Canadian readers (we just wish more of them could feasibly use Bell).

Hit us up in the comments, email your photos into news@precentral.net, let us know what you think!

If you’re still on the fence about the Pre, be sure to hit up our insanely comprehensive full Palm Pre Review and Guide. Toronto’s Globe and Mail (thanks tipster who for some reason wanted to be Anonymous) has an article up on the launch and why it’s good for Bell as a network:

“There’s no doubt the Pre will have a positive impact on our market share and there’s no doubt the Pre will have a positive impact on ARPU [average revenue per user] because it’s so easy to use, so our data revenue will grow,” said Wade Oosterman, president of Bell Mobility and chief brand officer of Bell Canada.

Don’t you wish you lived in a world where you didn’t know what APRU meant? Also, and we say this gently, why do you think Palm decided to start their Pre launch with two smaller (some might say struggling) networks?
