Evernote releases new beta

December 17th 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

Evernote was an early favorite on webOS and an example of some of the momentum webOS had from major app developers in its early days. Since then the app had seen a rough patch, but as we reported in October the company is hard at work on an updated version. Kudos, Evernote.

To that end they just posted a new beta, 1.3.5 Beta 1, in their forums. It brings notebook filters, an updated list view, editor improvements, and plenty of bug fixes. For reasons beyond our ken they’ve opted not to put their app up in Palm’s Beta feed, but if you know how to install an IPK (hint: WebOS Quick Install or Preware), you can head on over to the Evernote forums and grab it.

Evernote finally gets an update on webOS; more to come

October 26th 2010 | Posted by Nathan Mylott

Evernote app on webOS

A data loss bug that has crippled the webOS Evernote app finally has a fix available and more updates are on the way.

Evernote is one of the most powerful and popular cross platform note taking apps out there and was one of the first apps to hit the App Catalog when the Pre first launched. But it has stagnated in version 1.0 ever since and until recently, seemed abandoned by its developers. Evernote employee Dave Engberg said in the Evernote forums as recently as late August that ‘the WebOS client is currently on the "back burner" while we wait to see what happens with the platform.’

This was sad news for Evernote fans in the webOS community since version 1.o is virtually unusable. Notes created in the webOS app would sometimes fail to sync with the server and get stuck in the pending queue forever. The only solution was to delete the note and start over again. There is also an issue where it fails to scroll all the way to the end of a note and thus some of the text cannot be seen. I could not even run Evernote on my Sprint Pre because it would cause my phone to freeze up every time I launched it, so badly that I had to take the battery out to restart it. All of this on top of many limitations in the app’s feature set, such as a lack of copy and paste or full editing features available in other versions like bulleted lists.

At long last, version 1.1 is available for download, though not yet in the official App Catalog. It is available via a download link posted in the Evernote forums. You will need webOS Quick Install or other installer to get it on your device. This version fixes some of the data loss bugs and ‘more significant improvements’ are promised in future updates.

New in the App Catalog for 05 January 2010

January 6th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

App CatalogWhile yesterday’s large app drop didn’t bring anything new to the App Catalog, it did bring a whole slew of updates as we power forward to Palm’s CES presentation on Thursday, otherwise known as tomorrow (!). But a bunch of updates is nothing to sneeze at. Something to remember is now that the app limit has been fixed, applications can be of much larger sizes without worrying about taking up all available space. What that means for the end user is applications with richer graphics and sounds. We’ve got the list of that stuff all after the break.

Best Apps of 2009

December 31st 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

The App Catalog has seen impressive growth since it first went live a little over 6 months ago.  Palm’s Early Access program brought in dozens of developers who have created over 1,000 applications in that time frame, and while we don’t have access to as many apps as other smartphone platforms do, there are a number of high quality ones that fit into all of the important categories.

With that in mind, we’ve created a list of the must have applications that have come our way in 2009.  If you’re new to webOS (you should also see our getting started guide), or have been with the platform for awhile and are unaware of how the Catalog has grown over these last few months, this is a guide for you.

Video: Palm’s Presentation at the 2009 Sprint Open Developers Conference

December 6th 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

There’s more video being officially released by Sprint of it’s 2009 Open Developers Conference.  We’ve already seen a video of Rick Boatright from the webOS Internals group presenting on the second day of the event, and now the entirety of Palm’s presentation on the first day is available online.  A word of caution: the following is likely to put some to sleep, but I don’t think that I’m alone in thinking that it’s pretty damn cool to see some of the core people from Palm its webOS development team really drill down into what makes their product tick.

How to: Sync Notes and Memos on the Pre (Sort of)

July 7th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

No Note Sync

Want to sync Notes and Memos from your Pre to your Desktop and vice versa? I wish I could tell you that you could actually synchronize the notes from the Memos application on your Pre, but then I’d be lying to you. For whatever disappointing reason, the Pre in its current form does not support the synchronization of Memos and there’s not much that we can do about that. There are at least four different ways to deal with this. The first way is to just deal with it. The built-in memos application is both easy-to-use and plenty fast, plus it comes with type-to-search. But… it doesn’t sync with anything.

And then there’s Evernote, currently in free beta form in the App Catalog. You can take the notes in Evernote, in addition to snapping pictures to storing tasks, and all of it will sync with your PC, Mac, and even Evernote’s web services. But, as is so often the reality of betas, Evernote is a touch slow and occasionally buggy.

Have a Microsoft Exchange account? Then you can sync your notes, so long as you’re willing to make them notes attached to your tasks. And we know what you’re thinking, it’s kind of hacky. And we agree, it is hacky, and we shouldn’t have to stoop to using applications Tasks to sync our memos. Palm, are you listening?

Lastly, there’s email. If you’re a Gmail user, you can send messages to yourself with the subject prefix of “Note:”, and then using Gmail’s filters and labels you can have your notes automatically sorted into folders on the Pre. It’s a great magical sync and lets you use the Pre’s fantastic email program, but like the aforementioned Tasks notes syncing, it’s a hacky work-around that we should have to deal with.

So there’s four solutions, and we’re sure there’s more out there. We want to know, how do you sync your memos?
