Facebook Beta app update brings support for Places

November 18th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Facebook PlacesWhile Facebook is busy building apps for iOS and Android, the Palm Developer Relations Team is continuing to push the boundaries with their own webOS Facebook app. The latest update to the public Facebook app beta, version 1.4.53 brings support for Facebook Places, their location-based service that allows you to “check-in” at various locations. Places is gaining a prominent spot in the navigation menu, and as you’d expect each Places location receives its own page. The first major event we can see testing the new beta’s capabilities? Palm Developer Day NYC 2010, of course.

Facebook App: Open in new card

November 10th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

The webOS Facebook app was recently updated to support launching multiple instances of the app in separate cards.  This is really convenient because it allows you to can keep your place in your News Feed or on a personals profile while still loading up a specific post to view. There are two ways for you to take advantage of this feature.

  1. Facebook - Open New CardTap the Categories icon on the Top Bar (the icon on the right with six boxes) to bring up the icon view of the main areas of the app, and you will now see an "OPEN NEW CARD" option. Tap that option and a duplicate Facebook app card will launch
  2. 2. From almost anywhere in the Facebook App, just Meta-tap (press-and-hold on the Gesture Area) and tap a link, profile, comments icon, photo, etc, and that will load up in a new application card

For anyone on webOS 2.0, the new card will launch into the same Stack instead of in an adjacent card, which will make keeping your Facebook app cards nicely organized!

Note: All details are based on the Facebook or Facebook Beta app version 1.4.  Click here for instructions on installing the Facebook app

Facebook beta app bumps to v1.4, preps for webOS 2.0

October 19th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Facebook Beta 1.4The bleeding-edge Facebook beta client app developed by Palm today received an update to version 1.4, adding in new features to take advantage of webOS 2.0. Right now the only feature that those of us on webOS 1.4.5 can take advantage of is the Open New Card command, available at the bottom of the navigation pop-over. Tapping that bar opens a new Facebook card that duplicates the view of the source card. Additionally, a meta-tap (gesture area + screen tap) on any link within Facebook will open up in a new card.

The app notes also indicate that Just Type integration is present, as Dieter demonstrated in his 10-minute webOS 2.0 overview, though that integration is not something we’ll be able to take advantage of until webOS 2.0 and its Just Type feature is made available. Additionally, the "shake to reload" feature now has an on-off toggle in the app’s preferences, if, you know, you use your webOS phone inside a rock tumbler or something.

Update: That didn’t take long – the non-beta official version of the Facebook app has also received the 1.4.0 bump, bringing along all of the above-discussed features.

Thanks for the tip, Isaac!

Facebook App: Getting support

September 7th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Over the last week, we reviewed how to install the Facebook and Facebook Beta Apps, how to navigate the various sections of the app using the top bar or the via meta-taps, how to manage your news feed, and finally how to upload, caption, and tag photos directly in the app. To close out this series of Facebook tips, we wanted to provide you with some support resources if you are having problems using or installing the app.

  • The Facebook for Palm webOS page on Facebook itself has a great FAQ tab with troubleshooting suggestions. That should be your first stop for any support issues you have
  • One of the questions on that FAQ page is "How can I view the full website in the web browser?" They provide the answer to try visit http://www.facebook.com/home.php from your device, but we have one further suggestion for you. If you add "?sk=lf" to the end, will load up to your "Most Recent" feed instead of your "Top Stories".  So try visiting  http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf directly
  • And of course, you can always check out the PreCentral Forums and ask a question of your fellow webOS users!

We hope you have enjoyed this series of Facebook related tips? If you have any tips that you think we forgot, please Contact Us and suggest it!

September 6th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

One of the newest additions of the Facebook app has been the ability to upload a photo, write a caption for the photo, and then tag it directly in the Facebook app. Of course, you can also tag a picture in any of your other albums–not just the ones you upload from the App–but note that you can not tag any of your friend’s photos To accomplish the upload and tagging, just follow the simple steps after the break:

Facebook App: Managing your news feed

September 2nd 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

The News Feed essentially acts as your homepage within the Facebook App and provides a decent amount of flexibility to viewing and managing your feeds. There are a variety of actions that you can perform from this main page: update/review your status, upload a photo, read through your news feed, filter the feed to your various contact "lists", and refresh the page.  Keep reading after the break to learn all about how to accomplish these tasks.

Facebook App: Navigating the sections

September 1st 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Facebook - Navigate to...As we continue our review of the Facebook Beta App, we are going to quickly walk-thru each of the 7 main sections of the app and give a brief overview of what is included there (if you still do not have the Beta app, review our initial Facebook tip on how to install it). But before we get into the overview, let’s quickly talk about the three ways to navigate this app. In addition to the top bar header, you can swipe down from the top-left of the screen to bring up the Facebook application drop-down menu and then tapping "Navigate To…" to bring up the list of sections. You will also notice that each section here includes a Meta-tap to use a Gesture Area + keyboard shortcut to move between the app. So now that you know how to move around the app, let’s discuss each section (after the break!)

Facebook App: The top bar

August 31st 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

At the top of the facebook app, you will see a blue bar that will provide you access to the almost every areas of the app. Let’s take a look at this top bar in more detail

  • facebook app - notificationsTapping the globe icon on the left of the bar will bring up your most recent Facebook Notifications, which are all clickable to bring you to the person or activity listed. If there is a number of the top-right of the globe, that represents the number of new notifications you have, which will all be listed in bold. You can also click on the "See All Notifications" button to list all your notifications, not just your most recent ones. Clicking on this button also serves a dual purpose of resetting the count of "new" notifications
  • The center section of the bar, with the "Facebook" text", serves two purposes. If you are anywhere other than your News Feed, tapping this center area will bring you right back to the News Feed. Once in the feed, tapping this center Facebook - Top menuarea will quickly scroll to the top of the feed, and tapping it a second time will bring you to the bottom of the feed.
  • The icon of 6 boxes on the right will bring up a sub-menu that gives you access to the 6 main sections of the app, with your current section colored in blue.  Stay tuned tomorrow as we walk through each of those sections of the app.

Note: All details are based on the Facebook app version 1.3 or Facebook Beta app version 1.3.1

FaceBook Beta for webOS hits 1.3.1; Update: full version hits 1.3

August 31st 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

Well isn’t this serendipitous? Just as we started a week’s worth of Facebook for webOS Tips, Palm has dropped an update to the FaceBook for webOS Beta, updating it to 1.3.1. As RanGT notes in our forums, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of newness here, but Palm does write that there are "some bugfixes and performance improvements" to be had. We are detecting increased snappiness all around.

If you haven’t upgraded from the regular version of FaceBook to the Beta, we suggest you join us in the future – our own Adam Marks tells you how here.

Source: Facebook Beta for webOS; Thanks, RanGT!

Update: Looks like the official, App Catalog version of Facebook is up to 1.3 now, bringing landscape viewing, filtered news feeds, and more to the masses. If the Beta version scares you (it shouldn’t, but we don’t judge), snap it up. Thanks foggylemon!
