McKinney: We support homebrew, HP engineers creating webOS Apps

July 28th 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

HP CTO Phil McKinney just finished his speech at AlwaysOn and as expected, there were no major announcements to be had. McKinney did discuss some of the roadblocks between where we are and where we need to be with regard to mobile cloud computing – hitting on issues like the US falling behind in broadband infrastructure and companies intervening between app developers and users in oppressive ways.

McKinney also once again mentioned HP’s thinking with regard to the future of devices with those flexible displays, though he went one step further and hypothetized about separating the display from the device – ex. your connection could be your watch and you display could be a flexible display, your phone, or heck, even your entire wall as in the slide above. Who wouldn’t want a webOS Wall?

Q&A time brought a lot of questions about Palm. McKinney once again mentioned HP’s size and scale, natch, but he also pointed out that that he has given phones as prizes to HP engineers who develop good webOS apps:

Inside of HP with the 47,000 engineers I issued a challenge [...] for the HP engineers to go create apps, consumer apps [...] I stopped counting at 750 apps and my mailbox has totally exploded.

Some of those apps, by the way, have popped up in Palm’s Beta Apps feed.

McKinney pointed out that Palm does not get in the way of letting developers connect directly to their users. In fact, enterprises are free to create their own app distribution systems. McKinney also pointed out that HP supports homebrew:

We also support the homebrew guys. You hear about all the guys hacking phones and unlocking the phones, we actually encourage that. You can go out to PreCentral or any of the sites that support the Palm homebrew guys. they’ll tell you how to unlock your phone and how you can download the homebrew sites. The homebrew guys have just done some phenomenal work from the standpoint of really unlocking the true power of webOS.

Lastly, McKinney reiterated some of the points we heard last week: "We are also restating that our focus is webOS and Windows 7," meaning that Android is on the outs with HP for sure as is Windows Phone 7. He also reiterated that the Windows 7 Slate is meant solely for enterprise, HP is most definitely working on a webOS Slate device, and finally that Rubinstein wasn’t whistlin’ dixie when he said webOS 2.0 is coming.

Want to show Phil McKinney the same love he’s showing the community? He’s looking for some help creating an ‘audio brand / entrance theme’ for when he heads out to give speeches. The person who creates the best theme will win $1,000 to boot. Check it out here.

Update: the presentation video is online now.

Understanding the Homebrew Save/Restore App

July 8th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

SaveRestore

Back in April, we reported on a new app that was just hitting the WebOS-Internal’s testing feed called Save/Restore. The app was designed to help you restore all of your applications’ saved data and preferences after wiping your phone from a visit to the webOS Doctor or after a phone replacement. While still not officially at v1.0, the application has been in the production feeds for a few months now has been a great success and has seen some major enhancements. But before we talk about those enhancements, let’s give a quick recap on what Save/Restore actually does and why it’s necessary.

Introducing PreCentral’s “Tip of the Day”

June 22nd 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Tip of the Day

We are happy to announce that PreCentral’s “Tip of the Day” feature. We know that there is already a whole PDF file in the Precentral forums with over 300 tips, but have found that most webOS owners either don’t know about those or don’t have the time to read through them all. With so many forum postings asking about how to do some pretty basic functions within webOS (e.g. copy/paste, save picture from web), it got us thinking…why not create a “Tip of the Day” that doesn’t require a big commitment!?

You can find it here: http://www.precentral.net/tips. Obviously we’re just getting started, so there are plenty more to come. Want to suggest a tip? Great: hit us up on our contact form and select "Suggest a tip."

How-to: Tips for improving battery life

June 21st 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Palm Pre Battery

It’s the curse of the modern smartphone: a zillion chips and sensors and a bright powerful screen and umpteen radios all sucking power from battery tech that hasn’t seen drastic improvement in the last decade. And it’s also one of the biggest Achilles’ heels of the Palm Pre and Pre Plus. It’s been a while since we last visited this area, with the Pre and Pixi having now launched onto several new networks across the world, it’s high time we revisit the land of electricity. After the break, we break it down…

Almost every single webOS app is half-price! Update: through July 9th

June 18th 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

 50% off app sale

As we heard yesterday, Palm is running a new promotion:  (nearly) all webOS apps are now half-off – a quick perusal of the App Catalog shows all sorts of $0.50 apps and even 3D PDK Games are half-off. By our rough accounting, developers get double benefits from this promotion: increased sales and their share of the revenue will be treated as though their apps were full price.

In other words, if you’ve been waiting to purchase an app, now is the time. Get some great apps on the cheap and send some love to your favorite webOS developers.

What apps are you going to pick up?

Thanks to coolguyslim for the heads up!

Update: Palm lets us know that the "Half Time" promo ends on July 9th and that there are "a handful of exceptions" – so we’ll add an "Almost" proviso to the title. Proviso #2: US only, folks, sorry citizens of the world. Lastly, developers should be pleased to hear that for the purposes of the Hot Apps program, these sales will be counted at full price, per Palm’s dev forum - developers see the full FAQ here.

Palm announces $1 million Hot Apps program for PDK apps

June 9th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

If there’s got to be one disappointment for EA, Gameloft, and the handful of other PDK developers currently in the Palm webOS App Catalog, it’s that they can’t participate in the Hot Apps program. For those in need of a refresher, Hot Apps was set up to dole out one million in rewards to the top free and paid apps, with prize amounts ranging from $1,000 all the way up to $100,000. The current Hot Apps competition was only open to SDK-developed apps, as when Hot Apps launched the PDK was still in private beta with only the aforementioned handful of developers.

The current SDK-based Hot Apps competition ends on June 30. The next phase kicks off on July 1st (you know, the next day) and runs until August 31, 2010 and is putting one million dollars on the line for PDK apps. The prize breakdown is a bit different, and was clearly influence by the impending overlordship by Hewlett-Packard. As before, the most-downloaded free apps and the highest-revenue paid apps during the Hot Apps period will be ranked on the snazzy Hot Apps leaderboard, with the prize breakdown as follows:

  • #1 Free and Paid apps: $25,000
  • #2-6: $10,000
  • #7-431: $1,000 store credit at hp.com or an HP Envy 17 (MSRP $1,399.99+)

For the rules and minutia, check out Palm’s Developer Center posting. In the meantime, developers, get coding. There are some good apps to be made, and if you have a shot at your chuck of a million dollars while you’re at it, so much the better, eh?

As an aside, this seems pretty indicative of webOS 1.4.5 with proper sandboxing of PDK apps arriving by the end of this month.

Palm Pre one year later; What went right, wrong, and what’s ahead

June 6th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

1 year palm pre

One year ago today the most hotly-anticipated phone of 2009 – the Palm Pre – went on sale in Sprint stores across the United States. The past 365 days brought bright spots for Palm, the Pre, and webOS along with, sadly, a fair share of miscalculations and blunders.

Join us as we review the year in Pre.

Dear HP: Remember your roots, please don’t hamper webOS homebrew

April 30th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

HP Garage

With HP poised to bring Palm into their corporate fold, we find ourselves tempering our enthusiasm for the rescue of Palm and webOS with the fear of what corporate culture may entail for the plucky Sunnyvale-based smartphone maker. Specifically, fear that the corporate culture will not just shun, but shut down, the brilliant and creative efforts of the webOS homebrew community that helped prop up Palm to this point.

So HP, while we have faith that you know what you’re doing, we still feel like we need to take a trip down memory lane to make it clear just how much we think homebrew should be important to you. And the story we’re going to tell is yours.

Round Table: HP buying Palm, and what that means

April 29th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Round Table

Going to the chapel, and we’re gonna get pur-ur-ur-chased…

Welcome to Round Table, which is in fact not a table at all. Round Table is a continuing series on PreCentral where we pose a question to the staff and they provide their thoughts and insights. The question could be something simple like “what’s your favorite webOS app?” or something a bit more complicated, like “why did Palm choose the creepy lady?” Or maybe we’ll just end up chatting about our favorite episode of Alf, you never know. Today, however, we’re going to take a crack at the big news of the week: HP is buying Palm, and what does that mean?
