Pixi Overclocking, Switching switchers and more… From the Forums

July 7th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Here’s some of the latest talk in the forums:

  • Forum member stu5797 wants to know if it’s possible to overclock the svelte Pixi. The answer?  Not just yet.
  • The Virtual Keyboard: you know it, you love it, and tvc_15 wants to know just how much you use it instead of the hardware keyboard.
  • If you had to pick just one of the multitude of patches that have been made available by the army of individual developers out there to include in the next webOS update, which one would you choose?  HardBeatZ is keeping tally.
  • With all of the new handsets coming out these days, switching fever is in full effect, though many are finding that they just can’t do without the elegant UI of webOS. AJV223 switched back from the Evo, "On top of the 10 dollar fee added per month for the Evo, and then loading webpages started freezing up- that was my last straw for the Evo.", and Soulcreatr wasn’t far behind.

Update preparation, Centro battery debate and more… From the Forums

July 1st 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Here’s some of the latest talk in the forums:

  • With the PDK Hot Apps promotion set to go live on July 15th, you know an OTA update is inbound for the majority of you Pre and Pixi users out there.  Member AS4K wants to talk best practices in preparing for the next version of webOS with homebrew.
  • Revival: Here’s a fun thread from about this time last year that examined how many times you’ve opened the slider on your Pre, and numbers then were generally in the 800-900 range. After following the directions found in the thread, I discovered that I’m currently at a staggering 22,152.
  • Unsure what the webOS Doctor is all about?  Good news: knowing P|C forum members are here to fill you in.
  • There’s been much debate about the difference between the battery that comes stock with the Pre and the Pixi and the one that shipped with the Centro.  Many users, against the advice of Palm, continue to use the Centro battery in their webOS powered phones.  There’s a very real difference, as it turns out, and member itsjustme has the scientific proof.

Kernel clarity, open source discussion and more… From the Forums

June 21st 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Here’s some of the latest talk in the forums:

  • Are you curious about the differences between all of the overclocking kernels out there made for overclocking?  If so, I’ve got some good news: Rod Whitby from the webOS-Internals group is here with the final word
  • A certain development company (Appible LLC) borrowed the source code of a homebrew turned App Catalog favorite (DrPodder) without so much as a mention in the App Catalog description.  DrPodder is licensed under the GPL and Appible LLC covered their legal responsibility by giving credit in the source code, but the question remains:  did they violate the moral conventions of what open source should mean?  Go ahead: chime in.
  • Member Sviatapolk is looking to make the switch from a BlackBerry 8310 to the AT&T Palm Pre Plus.  CrackBerry addicts turned Palm faithful should speak up to let ‘em know what trade-offs to expect.
  • Hey Pixi owners: member berdinkerdickle is curious if you’re glad that you went with the slimmer and slightly less powerful device over the Pre!

Hardware Customization, Theme Talk, and More… From the Forums

May 26th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Here’s some of the latest talk in the forums:

  • User gsx decided that they wanted to add a custom Carbon overlay to the back of their Pre, and created a step-by-step guide if you should decide to.
  • Palm’s developer relations team has done an excellent job with the Facebook app over the last several months, but cmoneyct wants to know if you still use the full-on site instead of the webOS app.
  • Themes.  Many of you know them, some of you love them, and member pelikan3 is wondering if they’re worth all the trouble.
  • radiorob123 is in the market for a new smartphone and has the million dollar question: buy a Pre Plus now, or wait to see what’s just around the pike in terms of new webOS hardware?
