Dave Balmer, Palm webOS developer extraordinaire, is jumping from the creation to the support side of the development field by joining Palm’s Mojo SDK development team. Dave, who runs Gobico Games and built the popular webOS games Wobble Words (swoon) and Poker Drops, was recruited to join the Mojo SDK team and, as he puts it, to help “take a great SDK to new heights.” We’ll agree that the SDK needs some new heights, and are excited to see an accomplished developer like Dave joining the team.
If you’re fearful that your Gobico Games apps are going to fall be the wayside, fear not. Dave assures us that he’ll still be working on improving Wobble Words and Poker Drops, and may even push out some new apps if time permits. He’s also going to continue work on his open source JavaScript and HTML5 app framework “Jo.”
So congratulations to Dave! And golf claps to Palm for picking up another fine programmer to keep pushing the SDK forward. Now bring on those APIs!

Palm has released the seventh and ninth videos from it’s ongoing series of lectures at Stanford university. Video seven has Dave Balmer of Gobico Games sharing his experiences in developing for webOS and using all of the technologies associated with doing so such as CSS, JavaScript, and tool chains in a presentation that’s very similar to what he gave at Palm’s Developer Day.
The ninth video has Palm’s VP of Platform Tools Joe Hayashi give an overview of marketing strategies and how one might employ them in the mobile app space. I’ve always enjoyed Joe’s presentations, and this one doesn’t disappoint as he goes over some fascinating market case studies, marketing strategies, and even explores the marketing dynamics that caused the Snuggie to become so wildly successful (no, really). It’s a great presentation that’s followed up with some great resources to explore for further learning.
Video number eight is missing in action, but we’re promised that we’ll see it uploaded sometime soon. Catch both video seven and nine after the break.

The folks over at Gobico games that brought us the excellent Wobble Words puzzle game are back at it, this time with a combination of of solitaire and poker with Poker Drops ($1.99 in the App Catalog). I’m always on the lookout for a game that I can quickly jump in and out of to pass a few minutes while in line or on the bus, and Poker Drops fits the bill nicely. The premise of the game is to find as many poker hands (the better the hands you find, the more points you get) before the timer runs out. Not only is game play fast paced and engaging, you get to brush up on your knowledge of poker hands while you play.
