Now the Mac users amongst you are not the only ones with the 2-way calendar sync feature for the Palm Pre and Pixi. The webOS owners that normally use a Windows PC can have the new feature added to their arsenal as well. I guess you can say that using your webOS device with Outlook just got a lot easier.

You’ll find the Missing Sync for webOS available at Mark/Space’s website for $39.95. They promise new features coming soon in a free update, which will include syncing tasks with your Palm Pre (Tasks): “Take your to do list with you on your Pre”, and syncing notes with Palm Pre (Notes): “Copy and sync notes to and from your phone”.

Before, the Missing Sync help to sync the Palm Pre with Macs. Now you can also connect a Windows PC and your Pre to transfer and sync information and files – like contacts, calendars, ringtones, music, photos, video, and bookmarks – easily between your PC and the Pre. It even works with iTunes and Windows Media Player as you can see on the image above. And don’t forget the Proximity Sync, which lets you sync contacts automatically and wirelessly, via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, when your Pre is near your PC.

Also, The Missing Sync for Palm Pre works with Synergy, so that contacts from your PC can be viewed together on your Pre in a single list that links them with contacts from Google and Facebook accounts. Calendars from Outlook can be viewed or layered together in a single view with other calendars. The only bad thing is that Outlook integration isn’t 100% just yet, is just one way for now – from PC to Pre – but Mark/Space promise a free update sometime soon.

The price for the Personal Edition download is still $39.95, but if you already own any version of The Missing Sync, than you can upgrade for $29.95.

The Missing Sync for Windows is out of that technical trial and fully released.  Like your Mac-brethen, you Windows folks can now get your direct, USB-based (and occasional WiFi) sync on. iTunes, Windows Media Player, contacts, photos, movies, bookmarks, podcasts, ringtones, files... it syncs a lot.

Outlook integration isn't 100% yet, however, calendars is just one way (PC-> Pre), but Mark/Space will release a free update sometime soon that will bring that up to speed as well.

You're looking at dropping a cool $39.95 for the experience, but the ability to use proximity sync might just impress your friends enough to make it worth it. Also: you may need friends with more diverse interests. Just saying.

Mark/Space states that at this time, support for syncing of contacts and calendar events is performed via Wi-Fi – yes, only Wi-Fi, no USB – . And – of course – both the Pre and PC must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and that network must be connected to the Internet. This pre-release provides “overwrite sync” capability. Each time you sync it overwrites all the calendar events in the “My Computer” profile on your Pre with data from Outlook. This preview release allows you to sync your iTunes music library, playlists, and podcasts with the Pre. Support for Windows Media Player coming soon. The Photo plugin is NOT working yet, and when using the Folder Sync plugin, files stored on network attached storage (NAS) devices will only sync if the user has appropriate file permissions to read/write to that volume.

So remember folks; this is a pre-release of the PC version, so it has bugs and issues. I’m sure Mark/Space will be taking care of them in do time, but if you want to beta test this software head on over to the download page.

It doesn't work with Vista, at all, so don't try it unless you like bags of hurt.  It does sync over WiFi (not USB), and there are a host of other pre-release issues to contend with.  Knowing Mark/Space, the issues will be sorted out in short order, but if you enjoy testing stuff, take a look at the list of pending issues first and then mosey over to the download page.

Good on Mark/Space for making the Pre-Release build available because of the popular demand - if you give it a shot, please be sure to provide them with as much helpful feedback as possible (emails whose contents consist of "It doesn't work" or that recapitulate the known bugs don't count).

The Missing Sync for the Pre smartphone takes advantage of some of the Synergy technology that is a key feature of the Pre. The application allows users to synchronize iCal, Entourage, Address Book, iTunes, and iPhoto with the Pre. Also comes with proximity sync of your Synergy information over your Wi-Fi network, meaning you never have to think about syncing with your computer; it just does it.

According to Mark/Space, over the next few weeks, the pre-release PC version of The Missing Sync for Palm Pre will be available to a select few. As they add features, they want to hear from you. Palm has added two new apps to the Palm Pre webOS App Catalog. 

The first is Fliq Bookmarks from Mark/Space.  It's for Mac users only (PC version coming soon) and it's a small utility that works with their Missing Sync app to synchronize your Safari bookmarks to the Pre.  You sync your stuff to Fliq and then use the App to move them over to your Browser.

The second is Yet Another Restaurant Finder (feel free to use the acronym YARF when discussing it) called Open Table.  It joins Where, CitySearch, and GoodFood in allowing you to search for restaurants by location, filter by price and category, and so on.

Meanwhile, our Homebrew Apps section is creeping up on 100 apps as of this writing - we're-not-saying-we're-just-saying.

OpenTable for Palm webOS is one of the latest addition to the Palm Pre’s beta App Catalog. The popular restaurant reservation service adds a few new goodies to the menu thanks to the unique capabilities of Palm webOS. You can find restaurants with availability near your current location, and your reservations can be automatically integrated into your calendar.

This would be a great convenience factor if you don’t have a laptop around and want to make reservations from a business meeting for example. OpenTable is available to download immediately at no cost via the App Catalog.

Fliq Bookmarks is a helpful utility from Mark/Space that works hand-in-hand with The Missing Sync for Palm Pre to transfer Safari bookmarks from your desktop (Mac or PC) to your Palm Pre. As you notice; The Missing Sync for the Pre is required in order to use Fliq Bookmarks. For now it works only with Mac, the PC version is coming soon according to Mark/Space.

Apple updated iTunes to Version 8.2.1 today, and in its usual cryptic style, said that the new version “provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.” Pre users quickly began reporting on Palm’s support forum that the reference to “verification of Apple devices” meant iTunes syncing was broken.

This news doesn’t actually hit all that hard to those already using DoubleTwist for Palm Pre Media sync. I recommend that you use it too, at least until this issue gets sorted out. It may just be a long time though, but you also have the option of just not updating iTunes. Mac users may also want to check out The Missing Sync for Pre.
