How’s this for a followup to a serious buyout rumor? Palm’s Chief Technology Officer Mitch Allen is scheduled to speak on May 11th at "MDB Capital Group’s Bright Lights Conference." The topic: Palm’s IP and patent portfolio:
Palm’s Software CTO, Mitch Allen, will share his insights on Palm’s IP leadership and path of innovation where he has worked for the past decade. Mr. Allen has led the development of Palm webOS from conception to implementation.
If you find that interesting, get this: in the press release issued today, the firm hosting the event has a nice little line about Palm’s value: "we believe the value of Palm’s IP alone is worth between $8 -$9 per share." That’s an interesting little commentary on the roller coaster that has been Palm’s stock price (trading at around six bucks as of this writing) and the question of whether or not the market is undervaluing Palm’s patent portfolio. It could also potentially drive up the price for whoever buys them.
Thanks Palmwebos!

As a wanna-be developer, I rejoiced in the announcement in February of O’Reilly Books’ Palm webOS by Mitch Allen, read the free first chapter and even purchased the online preview version, in the hopes that it could turn me into a webOS developer. Now that I have read a review copy of the final print version, though, I am sad to say that it did not magically do so. On the other hand, experienced developers and those beginners who already know the basics of HTML and Javascript will find the book a hugely useful resource, and even those who are not yet at that level (but may be considering giving it a try, especially with the recent release of Palm’s Web-based Project Ares online development environment) will benefit from its clear discussion, code examples, best practices and identification of pitfalls. Even for the non-developer, Palm webOS provides insight into how applications work and interact on the Pre and Pixi.

There’s more video being officially released by Sprint of it’s 2009 Open Developers Conference. We’ve already seen a video of Rick Boatright from the webOS Internals group presenting on the second day of the event, and now the entirety of Palm’s presentation on the first day is available online. A word of caution: the following is likely to put some to sleep, but I don’t think that I’m alone in thinking that it’s pretty damn cool to see some of the core people from Palm its webOS development team really drill down into what makes their product tick.

Palm’s own Mitch Allen is teaming up with O’Reilly Media once again to bring us another free webcast on WebOS development. Mitch Allen, Palm’s Vice President and Software Chief Technology Officer, previously did another WebOS development webcast way back in February, so it’s good to see some follow-up now that the device is out in the public in two countries.
The webcast is scheduled September 9th at 10am PST, will last 1 hour, and is titled "Application Basics."
This session begins with an overview of the basic webOS application structure and a demo of the core SDK developer tools, and includes detail presentations on the application launch lifecycle, and Mojo controllers and methods.
Keen readers might remember the title "Application Basics" as the name of the second chapter of the Palm WebOS book. Indeed this webcast will be covering this chapter, as an aid to the book (and a nice resource for those who haven’t bought the book).
That’s not all. It appears Mitch Allen will be doing a webcast for each chapter of the book in a webcast series:
The webcasts in this series follow the Developing Applications for webOS: A Preview webcast (based on Chapter 1) presented in February 2009, with in-depth presentations on individual chapters in the book. Each webcast will cover concepts and background material, followed by a detailed example built using a sample application, News. Over the course of the series you will step through the construction of the complete application.
This is perfect opportunity for those interesting in developing for the WebOS to take a stab at it, following this free webcast series and learning how to make an application that takes full advantage of the Mojo SDK.

Mitch Allen’s Palm webOS Rough Cuts is no more. It is now just Palm webOS, and is set for a release in the venerable paper form in just two weeks time. As seen with the online version at Safari Books Online, the Rough Cuts “in progress” moniker is now gone, indicating that the book is indeed complete and ready to go. According to the Safari page, Palm webOS is set for a publish date of August 14th, though current subscribers can download the book right now.
Palm webOS will also land in paperback, retailing at $44.99. Interested parties can save a pretty penny by picking the book up at Amazon.com for a hefty 35% discount.
Are you a hard-copy, gimme the book sort of person, or is it easier to just hit up the developer forums?
Thanks to ericnyc646 for the tip!

Jason reported on the O’Reilly WebCast that took place back in February, and Dieter let us know earlier this month that Chapter Two of the Rough Cuts version of "Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript using the Palm Mojo™ Framework" by Palm Software CTO Mitch Allen had been released.
I read this morning over at Palm Infocenter that the final print version of the book, "Palm webOS", is available for pre-order from Amazon. The book, written by Palm’s chief technology officer Mitch Allen and the Palm webOS development team, offers a complete tutorial on the design principles, artchitecture, UI, tools, and services necessary to develop webOS applications.
You can pre-order the book for $23.09.

For those of you who missed it, here’s the full video of the webOS web conference that Mitch Allen hosted along with O’Reilly Media on the Feb 25. Engadget said that they could barely keep their eyes open while watching it, but I’m thinking that the first independent, garage based Palm Pre app millionaire might beg a little differently. In fact, I’m imagining a couple guys watching this video with eyes as big as dinner plates while they day dream about their first Ferrari paid for by some javascript application …

Every Palm fan should be familiar with Mitch. Not knowing who Mitch is would be a little like being the biggest fan of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and having no idea who Phil Jackson is. It’d be like loving Amazon.com and forgetting Jeff Bezos. If you love what Palm has done or will do for you, you need to know Mitch Allen.
