Motion Apps streamlines (and free-ifies) Classic certification

So, you’ve got that Palm OS app that you’re still proud of and while you’re working on a webOS version (which you should be), you’d still like to make sure Pre owners can use the app. Previously, you’d have to submit the app to Motion Apps, makers of the Classic Palm OS virtualization app, and then pay them for the privilege of being awarded “Classic Certification.” While the old axiom of you have to spend money to make money holds true for many an arena, Palm OS apps on Classic have been freed of that restrictio. Motion Apps did the right thing and made the submission process both easier and free. It’s a quick three step process:

Create a developer account with MotionApps.
Test and confirm that your application works well with Classic.
Upload it for signing and then download signed file ready for distribution.

It’s a stop-gap measure while you finish that webOS version of your app (you’re doing that after you finish reading this, right?), but anything that makes life for developers easier is something that we are all for.

VNC on the Palm Pre via Classic

Palm Pre users who have a copy of Motion Apps Classic PalmOS emulator will be happy to hear that you can now use VNC service. Motion Apps has posted on their site that they have successfully tested Win-Hand VNC to remotely control their windows machine. Motion Apps claim that they were able to easily navigate the remote machine and send emails. The functionality understandably has our forum members jazzed up.

What does this mean for the average user? Basically if you setup your computer with a VNC server, and then run the VNC client on your Pre you will have the ability to work from virtually anywhere. From a small screen of course, but if the difference is being at the office or working from the beach; the answer is clear.

VNC users may also want to try Palm VNC which can be found here. This will run from classic just like win-hand vnc. If you happen to be someone who loves everything about the Pre's linux insides, you can find instructions for a linux based VNC here. However the linux version doesn't run inside of classic and requires root access on the device. Finally, if you aren't picky about true VNC, you can get the same sort of remote PC access with the homebrew app RemoteWIN

The primary question surrounding the development of Classic - the Palm OS emulator for upcoming webOS devices - has always been, “But will it run X?”, X being your favorite must-have won’t-upgrade-without-it Palm OS application. While we’ve heard a lot about how well Classic runs, we haven’t heard a whole lot about what it will run. The makers of Classic, Motion Apps, have chimed in with an expanded screenshot gallery on their website that covers the following applications (a handful of which we’ve seen already):
