Palm’s NYC Developer Day Signup Starts Tomorrow–Get Ready!

October 13th 2010 | Posted by Jonathan I Ezor

We’ve already written about Palm’s planned Developer Day (actually two days) in New York City, being held on November 19th and 20th at 82 Mercer St. in Manhattan. We are posting this again because tomorrow (Thursday, October 14th) is the start of the registration period.

Here’s what Palm says about the schedule:

We’re coming to New York City for two in-depth days of webOS™ training and education. A special preconference tutorial will be held on Friday, November 19, for developers who are new to the webOS platform. On Saturday, November 20, Developer Day kicks off with a keynote by HP Personal Systems Group CTO Phil McKinney on the future of webOS, followed by technical sessions and panel discussions designed to enhance your webOS skills.

Sessions include:

webOS 2.0
The next generation of Palm’s powerful, web-based operating system is here. Come learn about how to use the new and updated features to make your apps more powerful and flexible.

Cross-platform development tools and strategy
Developing for multiple platforms and form factors is labor intensive, forcing many developers to bear the cost of supporting multiple platforms or leave large market segments untapped. Learn to leverage your investment using standard web technologies to develop cross-platform apps that can be deployed to many major platforms without significant duplication of work.

Partner panel discussions
We have invited chief technologists and industry experts from, PhoneGap, Strobe, Airplay and others to share how they found success integrating with webOS.

You can also stop by the App Lab any time for personal help from a Palm expert. The learning and sharing continues over catered meals, lightning rounds, and cool giveaways. We’ll cap off Saturday’s program with a great offsite party that you won’t want to miss!

Given how popular this event is likely to be (personal help! catered meals! giveaways! party!), it will probably fill up very quickly, so be sure to set your Pre’s alarm and head to the registration page as soon as you can tomorrow.

We hope to see you there!

webOS Developer Day(s) coming to New York City November 19-20

September 27th 2010 | Posted by Jonathan I Ezor

As we have been expecting, Palm has officially announced webOS Developer Day (actually two days) for New York City, to be held on November 19th to 20th, following up on the Sunnyvale event earlier this year.

According to Palm’s Developer Center site,

The festivities start on Friday, November 19th, with a special pre-conference boot camp for developers who are new to HP webOS. On Saturday, HP Personal Systems Group CTO Phil McKinney will give the keynote address to kick off the main event. Then, enjoy a series of technical sessions and panel discussions designed to enhance your webOS skills.

Looks like we may not get quite as much of a sneak peek as the earlier event, but we will see more webOS 2.0 highlights, Cross-platform development tools and strategy, webOS services with Node.js, some giveaways, and an Apps Lab to help developers.

Registration will begin October 14th, so mark your calendar for that day as well as the event.

Speculation: Sprint says WiMax handset coming this summer… C40?

February 19th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Sprint

According to Forbes, Sprint’s first WiMax handset – the first 4G handset from any US carrier – is expected to be available in the first half of 2010. While most logically expect that the phone will be the Android-powered HTC Supersonic (fitting name for a 4G phone), we have to wonder – could it be the C40?

Well, maybe. Frankly, we have no clue. In fact, the lack of info about the C40 has been driving us batty. But a summer launch would coincide with the Pre having been out for a year on Sprint – just in time for a full refresh. At the very least our no-evidence-except-for-intuition expectation is that Palm will release something that will amount to the Pre 2 on Sprint in the summer (or at least that what those of us on Sprint are hoping for), and there’s no reason that the C40 couldn’t be this device.

But why would we want a WiMax phone? For one, the interwebs would be ridiculously fast. Like mind-blowing fast for a phone. In theory, it could be faster than most Wi-Fi connections (Wi-Fi download speeds are limited by the slower ISP they’re hooked up to). With all that bandwidth – again, this is just speculation here – there’s no reason that a WiMax phone on Sprint couldn’t do voice and data at the same time – just run the voice over VOIP (technically EVDO already supports this). But a WiMax radio would only further amplify one of the biggest hurdles Palm is trying to overcome with just EVDO and HSDPA: battery life. Unless they’ve got a ridiculously efficient WiMax radio, a Palm phone with a stock 1150 mAh battery would last, oh, an hour. Maybe.

All that said, chances are that you don’t have WiMax service where you live, at least not yet. Sprint currently has WiMax coverage in a handful of cities across the United States, but in partnership with their quasi-subsidiary Clearwire are rapidly expanding coverage. Sprint expects to add New York City and San Francisco to their WiMax roadmap soon, a move that is sure to tempt many a frustrated iPhone user in those AT&T bottleneck metropolises. Additionally, despite the acceptance of LTE by carriers worldwide, global WiMax deployments are accelerating. eWeek notes that by the end of 2010 combined global WiMax coverage in 147 countries is expected to surpass 800 million people, and one billion a year later. Currently WiMax deployments cover around 620 million.

Palm Pre Developers Meet-up: July 13 in NYC

Are you a webOS developer in the vicinity of New York City? You are? What a crazy random happenstance! Listen up, because we’ve got something exciting for you. It’s a Palm Pre developer meet-up in New York City on this coming Monday, July 13, at 7:00 pm. Put together by Michael Prenez-Isbell of BlueSwitch, the first-ever Palm Pre Developers Group meet-up in NYC will take place at the BlueSwitch offices at 61 Broadway (27th Floor), just a few doors south of Trinity Church.

On tap for discussion will be (naturally) webOS, the Mojo SDK, and the Palm Pre itself. Speaking at the meet-up will be Eric Marthinsen of Agile Commerce – the company that developed FlightView for the Pre. Also speaking will be BlueSwitch executives Alex Paskie and Richard Chalme, who will be announcing a “major partnership” of some variety at the meeting.

Now that you know, are you going? If so, drop us a line and let us know how it goes!

Meanwhile, we’re hearing very good things about the PreDevCamp, which is a GO for August 8th and more coming.  Stay tuned!
