Sprint picks up ESPN TV in place of the NFL

March 15th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

ESPN

If you were mourning the loss of Sprint’s NFL contract, fret not, as they’ve signed a new sports entity that’s bound to appeal to more sports fans: ESPN. So while folks on Verizon may soon be enjoying all that the NFL has to offer, Sprint subscribers can now fire up the Sprint TV app and start watching the new ESPN Mobile TV channel. In just the next two months ESPN Mobile TV will be broadcasting 23 men’s NCAA basketball games, 19 women’s NCAA basketball championship games, 9 NBA playoff games, 10 regular season MLB games, and plenty of ESPN-exclusive news and reviews content – all live.

And that’s just through the end of April. 2010 will bring more than 800 sporting events to Sprint TV subscribers (which is anybody with a Pre or Pixi on Sprint), including the 2010 FIFA World Cup, college football, MLB, NBA, Grand Slam tennis, and more.

Verizon snatches NFL contract from Sprint

March 10th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Interception!

Sprint users, say goodbye to the NFL app: Sprint has lost their contract with the National Football League. The Wall Street Journal notes that Verizon users have reason to celebrate (if you are into such things), as Big Red has signed a new four-year contract with the NFL to bring all the coverage and the popular RedZone Channel to Verizon phones. The new deal is valued at $720 million, a 50% premium over what Sprint was paying the NFL. And that’s not all: Verizon users are getting more from the NFL than Sprint did: they’ll have access to live footage of every NFL game and plenty of additional content.

Football fans on Sprint need not fret, though you may find yourself disappointed. With the NFL contract gone, Sprint’s football app will cease functioning at the end of March, as was posted on SprintUsers.com. A new Sprint Football Live app will replace the NFL app, but all that exclusive video won’t be coming along with it. Apparently Sprint Football Live will provide all sorts of live coverage of the NFL draft, games, and more, but in the form of raw data, news, and commentary – not the official stuff with live audio and video that Sprint users have gotten used to.

Sprint Football Live is expected to be available before the end of the month, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it mixed in with the next webOS update for Sprint devices. Verizon webOS users may be disappointed for a while, though, as Verizon marketing chief John Stratton noted to the Wall Street Journal that their new NFL service will be available for Android and BlackBerry devices. The equally capable webOS devices like the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus? Not mentioned.

Live NFL Network Telecast on your Pre Begins Thursday

November 10th 2009 | Posted by Annie Latham

Sprint just announced that they will be the only wireless carrier to offer live NFL Network game telecasts via its exclusive NFL Mobile Live application and on Sprint TV beginning Nov. 12 when NFL Network televises the first of its eight-game Thursday Night Football schedule. Both NFL Mobile Live and Sprint TV are available at no additional cost to Sprint data subscribers with a data plan.

The first televised game features the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Chicago Bears on NFL Network. [Editor note: the Palm Pre is unable to withstand being doused in tears, so Bears fans should use with caution - Dieter]. NFL Network’s Thursday night telecasts will be available to Sprint subscribers including games on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) and special NFL Network games on Saturday, Dec. 19, and Christmas Day (Friday, Dec. 25).

The good news is that for those who don’t have access to the NFL Network broadcasts, they’ll be able to view the action from the comfort of their Palm Pre or other Sprint smartphone.

The NFL Mobile Live application is chock full of everything a football fan could want and has been a great way to keep track of the goings on while being out and about. The addition of live action video puts this app over the top, as long as the battery doesn’t conk out.

Is the NFL app working right for you?

September 27th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

NFL Palm PreIt’s a cool autumn Sunday night in America, and there’s only one thing that can mean. Football! We’re now two weeks into the 2009 NFL season and for two weeks now we’ve been getting reports that the NFL app that ships on the Sprint version of the Palm Pre is just not working correctly, if at all. While it has worked just fine for us, we’ve heard from enough of you that we have to wonder if we are somehow in a lucky minority of Pre owners (whom we consider to be a lucky minority at that).

Some have told us that things like the video feeds (both on-demand video or live streaming NFL Network) aren’t working or the app itself is just a general mess of failure. So sound off in the comments and the poll below, how’s the Pre’s NFL app working for you?

Emoticons on Text and GTalk for the Pre

July 27th 2009 | Posted by Juventino Quinones

When we first broke the rumor about WebOS bringing emoticons to the Palm Pre, we were not sure if this was true or not. Well, it is true! Although I have notice that not all the recipients receive the emoticons in the same way.

I guess one of the more entertaining features in WebOS 1.1 – [...]

NFL Mobile Live Coming to Palm Pre August 1st

July 9th 2009 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

A Sprint support page indicates that NFL Mobile Live will be coming to the Palm Pre on August 1st. We just heard that we should be able to expect webOS 1.1 within a month, but we didn’t know if it would come with more apps. We can’t say for sure that NFL Mobile Live will come with 1.1, but it seems like a solid guess to us. In the comments on that 1.1 post, DSulls points us to a Sprint Support site about NFL Mobile live for the Palm Pre, indicating some excellent news:

  • NFL Mobile Live will be delivered via an OTA Update
  • It will be pre-loaded on all Palm Pre phones on August 1st

Similar to Sprint’s NASCAR app, NFL mobile live allows you to get live audio of every regular season game, Live video of certain NFL Network games, and live NFL Network video 24/7.  Not to mention "Red Zone Alerts" to let you know when a team is likely to score. Since Sprint requires an Everything Data plan, there won’t be any additional charge for the app.

Color this Vikings-fan-in-Florida excited, following my precious Purple will soon be a lot easier.

Thanks, DSulls!
