Pre Plus on Raising Hope

Or should we say “ǝdoɥ ƃuısıɐɹ :ƃuıʇʇods ɯןɐd”? Either way, it’s another Pre Plus sighting, and this time it’s, well, it’s both upside down and sporting a custom UI that boggles our minds. We can see how it was needed for the episode, as an incoming call to a sleeping webOS phone doesn’t give the option for “ignore,” but seriously, you couldn’t even make it right side up? And you gave it such a bland UI – it looks like something you’d find on a feature phone pretending to be smart. Sheesh. Another shot after the break.

Palm Spotting: Chase

Palm Pre on Chase

It seems the baddies need to get some multitasking smartphone action too. NBC’s more-than-likely-doomed US Marshalls series Chase has featured the Palm Pre a few times, but never too up close. Now it has, with the Pre Plus (yes, not the Sprint original, mind = blown) getting some screen time after getting picked up from the fleeing criminal’s car. What’s there to look at? Home movies, of course.

Palm Spotting: Two and a Half Men

Alan Harper's PalmPre

We’ve seen Alan Harper’s (played by John Cryer) Palm Pre before, and we’re glad to see he hasn’t jumped ship just yet to some of the more enticing devices on the market. We’re also glad to see him getting involved in ridiculous promiscuity, instead of older brother Charlie. Granted, ridiculous promiscuity is not something we actively encourage here at PreCentral, but it does make for humor of the base and low-brow variety. We may be cultured folks here, but there’s an undeniable level of funny to Two and a Half Men.

Palm Spotting: Private Practice

Palm Pre on Private Practice

We never cease to be surprised by all the places the Palm Pre keeps cropping up. This time, it’s Private Practice, on the nightstand of Dr. Violet Turner (played by Amy Brenneman). She’s otherwise too *ahem* occupied to answer the phone, but we’re psyched to see a default UI in play here, complete with contact photos and proper ringing. Though we are slightly baffled that this phone appears to be running a pre-1.3.5 version of webOS (the font on the clock gives it away). We’re also baffled by the phone being stuck at the halfway point in slider land – perhaps her slider is all janky? It is a Sprint Pre afterall, maybe she’s had it since launch and didn’t opt for the insurance.

Palm Sighting: Weeds

Palm Pre on Weeds

Showtime’s dark comedy Weeds has steadily gained more and more viewers and garnered award after award during its six-season run. The Palm Pre made an appearance at the end of September, in the hands of series lead Nancy Bowtin (played by the ridiculously attractive Mary-Louise Parker), along with a pistol. Okay, technically the phone belonged to Cesar, an aide of crimelord/politician Esteban. We won’t go and spoil any further details from the episode, but suffice to say, things aren’t going extremely well (it’s Weeds – do they ever?).

Palm Sighting: How I Met Your Mother

Palm Pre on How I Met Your Mother

CBS’s How I Met Your Mother has stood for a while as a sitcom option that continues to gain viewers and yet maintain an ongoing story arc over multiple seasons (specifically, the titular culminating love life of Ted Moseby). But the most popular character, it would seem, is that of Barney Stinson (played by the perpetually awesome Neil Patrick Harris). Stinson, the ultimate bro, has a brother of his own James Stinson, played by the equally awesome Wayne Brady. And what does an awesome guy like him need? A Palm Pre, of course, all the better to show off pictures of the children with.

Palm Spotting: The Defenders

Sprint Palm Pre and Palm Pixi on The Defenders

Sometimes we see a Pre, sometimes a Pixi… but both? In the same scene? Right next to each other? Unheard of, at least until now. It was the pilot episode of the new television series The Defenders on CBS that brought this crazy random happenstance, and we even get to see the Sprint Pre running a native UI (unsure what’s going on in with the motion-blurred Pixi). Granted, the show’s producers took some liberties to and made the phone’s background appear to be a super-huge-letters text message (and what’s this, a missed call?), but we’ll give them a bit on artistic license there. But here’s a question… why’s Jim Belushi the one with the Pixi?

Palm Spotting: Dan For Mayor

September 9th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Pink Palm Pre on Dan For Mayor

Tell us, what colors does the Palm Pre come in? If you answered “black,” then you’re today’s lucky winner of a pat on the back. But perhaps the new honchos at HP will see fit to note the joy on actress Agam Darshi’s face when she pulls a pink-cased Palm Pre out of the box. Presumably it’s an original CDMA Palm Pre on Bell, as that’s where the show Dan for Mayor is based, so we know she’s getting a good deal as far as her service plan is concerned.

There is the matter of the phone apparently coming with features we hadn’t been told about, namely a digital compass, haptic feedback, and Street View in an unnamed mapping application. Of course, the digital compass can’t be faked if you don’t have the hardware, but if you want it, you can get haptic feedback on your Pre through patching, and Street View is available in the work-in-progress BFG Maps app. Oh, and the pinkness? We’ve got cases for that. Video of the whole deal after the break (thank goodness for region agnostic YouTube).

Palm Sighting: Shatner on NYT’s Screen Test [video]

September 3rd 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

William Shatner swipes up to answer

Actor, thespian, and all-around coolest man on the planet William Shatner has been a Pre user for a while now, and like the coolest man on the planet that he is he’s not afraid to show it off. He did so while taping an informal segment for The New York Times’ online Screen Test series, answering a call from his daughter Melanie. We have to say, we’re both fascinated and disappointed that The Shat uses the stock webOS ringtone, though we can understand that he wouldn’t want to use something so obvious as the Star Trek theme or a communicator chirp. Check out the video after the break.

Palm Sighting: The Old Guys

Palm Pre unboxing on The Old Guys

While we in the States may not get the jokes, we still notice when a Palm device pops up on the BBC. This time it was British sitcom The Old Guys (not viewable in the US of A, or outside of the UK for that matter), a show about two, as BBC describes the, elderly delinquents. Apparently in the latest episode, one asked for a smartphone and received a… drum roll please… Palm Pre. It’s one of the few unboxings we’ve see on TV of any phone, let alone for a sitcom.
