Review: Pronto Dial

October 13th 2010 | Posted by Mark Jensen

Pronto DialSpeed dial apps certainly aren’t for everyone. It is not uncommon for webOS users to make the “no need” case against speed dial apps, as webOS does in fact have many speed dialing features built-in to its native functionality. There is the oh-so-handy universal search, soon to be rebranded as “Just Type.” There are physical keys aplenty just waiting to be assigned one-touch speed dial functionality. Point being, these are just some of the “no need” arguments waged against speed dial apps made for webOS, and we have to admit, these arguments are not without merit.

However, if one-touch assigned physical keys or “just typing” to speed dial isn’t enough for you, there are currently some twenty-some speed dial apps available to you in App Catalog. That’s nothing new, as speed dial apps have been among some of the very first available for download in the early days of the App Catalog, and have been a mainstay among apps since the days of Palm OS and the old-school Treo line.

One such speed dial app, Pronto Dial, $3.00 from angryGoat (love that name), has more than just hit my radar of late. It has replaced my phone app and landed a permanent spot on my Pre’s launch bar. Pronto Dial is a relative latecomer to the speed dialer party. It was first available just a few short months ago, early July 2010 to be exact, long after other speed dial apps had enjoyed nearly a full year of exposure and development, and even tens of thousands of combined downloads. To date, Pronto Dial clocks in with a respectable but room-to-move download count just over 2,200 total downloads as of this writing.

Review: Dropboxify

September 24th 2010 | Posted by Joseph Dowdy

DropboxifyFor the price of $2.99 from the Palm App Catalog, you too can get running with Dropbox on your webOS device. I have Dropbox on my laptop and keep my super-valuable files synced to their cloud servers so that they can be accessed from a browser or from another computer with Dropbox software and now from my Palm Pre with Dropboxify from developer DoGood. I found that in a very short period of time, I was able to browse my Dropbox files from the app on my phone after putting in my account email and password. Super easy, in fact.

Browsing files was made easy by an alphabetical list of content in folders (with content/context-sensitive icons on them) and files with appropriate application icons in a fast-scrolling list. One touch of a folder opens the folder out into a new card showing the contents. Tapping a file presents the choice to Open (in place), Save, or Email the file.

Flickr Addict Review

July 6th 2010 | Posted by jakerome

Please welcome jakerome, a hero in our forums, as our latest reviewer! – Dieter

Being a huge Pre fan and a bit of an anti-legend on Flickr, I was excited when I saw FlickrAddict had been introduced into the App Catalog. Not knowing what to expect, I was happy to discover that this app was the most stellar wallpaper app on webOS. Fun, serendipitous, easy to use, customizable and being constantly improved by Shane O’Sullivan, the Irish developer that’s always seem ready to answer questions & respond to user feedback.

Book Review: Palm Pre for Dummies

April 23rd 2010 | Posted by Jonathan I Ezor

In less than 10 months since its launch, the Pre has generated a number of books (we’ve previously reviewed Palm webOS by Paul Allen and Edward C. Baig’s Palm Pre: The Missing Manual), and as with so many other things, it has also yielded a Wiley Publishing Dummies title: Palm Pre for Dummies, by Engadget’s Mobile Editor Chris Ziegler. Although the rapid pace of webOS development may have eclipsed some of the content (it came out in late 2009), it still serves as a useful introduction to the Pre and webOS.

Review: Incipio Orion Sleeve Case for Palm Pre

Incipio Orion Sleeve Case for Palm Pre

The Incipio Orion Sleeve Case for Palm Pre is a clean and stylish way to carry and protect your Pre. While similar in concept to Palm’s own Leather Side Case, the Orion sleeve executes more cleanly, not to mention being available in variety of colors.

Review: BlackBerry VM-605 Bluetooth Car Kit

March 1st 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

BlackBerry VM-605 Blueooth Car Kit

Packed into the deceptively small package of the BlackBerry VM-605 Bluetooth Car Kit you’ll find a host of quality audio equipment and technology that puts this car kit a step ahead of the pack. Now I know you’re asking yourself, “I thought this was a Palm site, not CrackBerry.com.” You’re right, but seeing as the VM-605 is a bluetooth car kit, it should be more or less universal and work with just about any bluetooth-equipped phone. The Pre would be one such phone, and the VM-605 performed admirably when paired.

Review: Jabra Cruiser Bluetooth Car Kit Speakerphone

Jabra Cruiser Bluetooth Car Kit

The Jabra Cruiser bluetooth car kit packs a bevy of technology in a sleek and shiny package. While far from innovative, the Jabra Cruiser is an adequate car kit and performs capably when paired with a Palm Pre. As you might imagine, adequate does not equal superb. The Cruiser just didn’t measure up to its price tag when it came to making calls.

Review: Incipio Leather Hipster Pouch

January 16th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Incipio Leather Hipster Case

The Incipio Leather Hipster Pouch for Palm Pre is a tank of a leather case. I don’t mean that in just that it will protect your Pre well against daily threats, it’s actually also notably heavy in comparison to some other cases, including the identically designed Incipio Sports Holster. The stitched leather case was designed specifically with the Pre in mind, so you can count on it to provide a good fit without being too tight or too loose.

X-Plane: New Heights in webOS 3D Gaming

January 8th 2010 | Posted by Jonathan I Ezor

During the launch of (official) 3D gaming for webOS at the Palm CES presentation, the games that got the most attention (and live demos) were Need for Speed Shift and The Sims 3 from EA Mobile. Among the new games, though, was another title which while less well known to most consumers is revolutionary in its own right: X-Plane ($9.99), by Laminar Research. (You can see the full description of X-Plane in PreCentral’s new App Catalog Gallery here.) For avid or even casual flight simulation fans, X-Plane for webOS is the real deal.

Forum Review: Need For Speed Undercover

January 8th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

We’re still roaming the show floor, hunting down what webOS news we can find – meanwhile our forums are afire with talk of the new 3D apps. This app review is brought to you by forum member FiXXXerX.

So here we are, hours after the CES Press conference with a series of new apps that have been released by some fairly high profile companies, a first for WebOS and a much needed boost to the App Catalog. Today I will be reviewing Need For Speed – Undercover. In case you’ve been living under a rock that has been hidden in a cave for the past decade you most likely know what Need For Speed is, however, for those of you that have only recently emerged I’ll give you an overview of what your looking at here. The Need For Speed (Or NFS for short) franchise from Electronic Arts is all about taking a stock production car and personalizing it per your taste and then driving it… fast. This personalization includes performance tweaks and visual modifications and then going out and establishing yourself as a dominant racer in a number of different scenarios. The game we’re looking at today has you going Undercover (As the title suggests) and racing against all sorts of nasty-for-no-reason thugs who apparently spend a majority of their time street racing… in fact, just imagine Fast and The Furious with less plot and your in the right zone, so lets get into it…
