Patching in webOS land is one of those areas where we can definitively gleefully mock declare our superiority claim a win over our friends with Android and iOS devices. The hundreds of patches available in Preware, through our forums, and even through some simple coding of your own provide customization options most platforms don’t even offer. WebOS Internals’ newest code magician, Sconix, has been hard at work whipping up a new mega patch that consolidates the functions of multiple patches into one neat little package. Unlike the much-lauded Advanced Configuration for Launcher patch, the new Advanced Configuration for System Preferences patch touches multiple apps in a multitude of ways. So many ways, in fact, that you’re going to have to head past the break to check it out.

Actor, thespian, and all-around coolest man on the planet William Shatner has been a Pre user for a while now, and like the coolest man on the planet that he is he’s not afraid to show it off. He did so while taping an informal segment for The New York Times’ online Screen Test series, answering a call from his daughter Melanie. We have to say, we’re both fascinated and disappointed that The Shat uses the stock webOS ringtone, though we can understand that he wouldn’t want to use something so obvious as the Star Trek theme or a communicator chirp. Check out the video after the break.

If this cat-and-mouse game with Palm and Apple over iTunes is getting on your nerves and solutions like DoubleTwist or Salling Media Sync just aren’t good enough for you, then Mark/Space may have the solution for which you’ve been waiting. It’s called GoGadget, and it pulls the media synchronization features of their The Missing Sync for webOS desktop software out and bundles them into a tight little package. We’ll be giving away five copies of GoGadget during this week’s PalmCast Live – details are after the break.
How To, MP3, Palm, Palm Music Assistant, Palm Pre, USB Drive, iTunes, media sync, pre, ringtone
The Palm Pre does come with some fairly nice ringtones onboard, but there are two completely understandable complaints to register: they’re not loud enough, and they’re not yours. Well, we at PreCentral are here to fix both of those problems!
Say you actually like the percussive ringtones that came packaged on your Pre, but they’re just too quiet and you keep missing calls. Using the MP3 Gain desktop application that cencom14 in our forums found, we were able to ramp up the volume on the default Pre ringtones and deliver them straight to you (download: 4 MB ZIP file). To get them (and other music files) onto your Pre, unzip the files, plug your Pre in via the Micro-USB cable, select USB Drive, and then drag and drop the files into the ringtones folder on the Pre. You can also sync via iTunes (select Media Sync instead of USB Drive) or using the Palm Music Assistant.
Those default ringtones aren’t for everybody though, so Palm has smartly made it easy to add your own MP3 ringtones to the Pre. Once you’ve synced your music onto the Pre, launch Sounds and Ringtones, click on the Ringtone selection box, and then click the +Music button at the bottom left. This will give you and alphabetical list of all the music synced to your Pre, just tap on the one you want and after a bit of processing it will appear in your ringtones list. If you end up not liking a ringtone you’ve loaded, simply swipe to the left or the right to delete it.

I have to say it sounds quite pretty, and is much better than the iPhone’s Marimba ringtone. Roger Bourland was commissioned to write the 8 new ringtones for the Palm Pre, including this one (hit up the link to hear it).
Bourland praised Matias Duarte for having the vision to commission “micro-compositions; not just phone emulations, [...]
Palm Pre, Rumors, dataviz, documents to go, inside sprint now, palm backup, ringtone, update, usb, video capture, webOS

So, those crafty buggers behind Inside Sprint Now have done it again. This time, it’s a second set of frequently asked questions, though this time it appears that the questions have not been lifted from the support documents, but are instead those that Inside Sprint Now has received from readers.
There are some mundane questions, like if you can receive calls during USB mode (no), disable browser cookies (yes), choose your calendar colors (yes), run multiple IM conversations (yes), set your music as a ringtone (yes), and so forth. But there are interesting questions too, like how much does this Palm Backup service cost? Nothing, at least out of your pocket. Apparently video capture will not be in the mix at launch, but ISN says "hang in there as great things are on the way, and as the Palm Pre uses the webOS, updates are just a gesture away!"
Oh, and here’s an interesting little bit, though how to interpret it is not exactly clear:
Office 2007 – Any issues?
Nope. Go ahead, tell your boss about it, and bring it to work. Welcome to life with the Pre – it just works!
Huh. Is that referring to the Doc Viewer application icon that we’ve glimpsed before, or is this something more sinister, perhaps DataViz’s (launch partner!) superb Documents to Go software will be on the Pre at launch. Either way, we’re now in the less-than-two-months-left window, so keep you ears to the ground for more news.
Thanks to Peter and Mahootzki for the tip!
