When the Pre was released in June 2009, there were two power-related features that made users particularly excited. First was the Touchstone, the inductive charger whose system-level integration with webOS (automatic speakerphone, clock display, etc.) and thoughtful design (sticky back, magnets for easier and more secure placement) put it well beyond the third-party solutions available for competitors. The second innovation, at least when compared to the iPhone, was Palm’s choice to make the Pre’s battery easily replaceable. Once users found out how quickly a Pre with all radios on (WiFi, data, GPS, Bluetooth) could go through its standard 1100 mAh battery, the ability to swap out batteries was both appreciated and crucial for long days, although Palm’s spare batteries were no better than the originals.

It’s the curse of the modern smartphone: a zillion chips and sensors and a bright powerful screen and umpteen radios all sucking power from battery tech that hasn’t seen drastic improvement in the last decade. And it’s also one of the biggest Achilles’ heels of the Palm Pre and Pre Plus. It’s been a while since we last visited this area, with the Pre and Pixi having now launched onto several new networks across the world, it’s high time we revisit the land of electricity. After the break, we break it down…

We know that webOS and the Palm Pre are 1.0 1.1 products, so we’re going to cut you some slack for now. But that slack is starting to run out, and looking at the competition there are some areas where I think you could improve the Pre to both catch up to and leap frog over iPhone and BlackBerry and Android. So here’s what I’d like to see in the way of software updates before that slack runs out and the real complaining starts.
My list is after the break, and it’s by no means comprehensive. Feel free to sound off in the comments if there’s something you think should be added in!
Oh, and Palm, this isn’t an ultimatum or anything. It’s a wishlist. Of stuff I want. So consider it a shopping list, and you’re the grocery store. Some things we can do without, but others are staple items that we need to get through the week, and if you don’t have it, we might have to go across town to the other grocery to get it. After a while, that can get kind of old and we might consider just going to the other store. We don’t want to, as it’s simply not as nice, but they have a lot of what we need.

The Seidio Spring Clip Holster series is designed to keep your device secure and close to your hip, yet still allows for quick and easy access to your Pre. The holster is coated with soft-touch rubber that is similar to the back of the Touchstone cover. The case is made of polycarbonate which has a firm build quality and it is designed to have your phone face inward in order to avoid any accidental screen damage.
The holster has a locking swivel belt clip that offers up to seven different rotating angles (so you don’t have to worry if this is a vertical or horizontal case, it can be both if need be). There are two versions available (this review will cover both since they are almost identical); the first has a headphone quick access prong spring-clip and while the second version shares the same exact polycarbonate body, it has a different spring-clip that does not allow for quick access to the headphone port on the top of the device.

We all know that the Palm Pre is one of the coolest phones when paired with the Touchstone charger. Specially when you have them both inside a car. But until now, the downside was the inability to use a protective case on the Pre while charging on the Touchstone.

Heavy Palm Pre users will have discovered that the smartphone’s battery life can prove insufficient for a full day’s use, especially when you’re receiving push email and using juice-thirsty features like GPS and 3G data. Third-party battery manufacturer Seidio had already promised a double-capacity pack for the Pre; now they’re offering one with a more slight [...]
