Sprint opens Total Equipment Protection enrollment open for March

March 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Sprint

Have a Palm Pre or Pixi on Sprint and wishing that you’d signed up for the $7 a month Total Equipment Protection plan during the first 30 days of your contract when you still had a chance? Sprint’s giving you a second chance: for the entire month of March Sprint has opened up TEP to all subscribers. If you’re not feeling like pushing your luck any further, you can sign up until the end of the month. For those unfamiliar, TEP has two components: hardware failures are completely covered and accidental damage or loss replacement comes with just a $100 deductible. Having replaced his own Pre three times – taking advantage of TEP each time – this blogger knows all too well how useful of a tool TEP is.

Palm WiMAX rumors continue to swirl

March 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

WiMAX Palm? Don't count on it

Analysts say all sorts of different things about Palm, and when we’re hearing something wild from just one of them we tend to discount it. But when multiple analysts and supposed insiders are chattering about something we have to sit up and take notice, even if we’re still not completely buying it. The latest Palm rumor falls into that camp: Palm is developing a WiMAX (4G) device for Sprint and could be unveiled as early as this month at CTIA.

We’re not entirely sure what to make of this. There is always the almost mythical Palm C40 floating around in Sprint’s inventory systems, but we haven’t heard anything other than rampant speculation about what Palm’s next products might be.

As for all the talk about how a WiMAX phone will save Palm… That, like the existence of the phone itself, might be wishful thinking. Like it or not, WiMAX still has a relatively small footprint and Sprint is still a network with half as many subscribers as competitors Verizon and AT&T. A WiMAX Palm phone would be undeniably awesome, but it would also mainly be compelling to a small subset of users on a small network.

Thanks to DeltaSPARTAN003, EtuTreo300, and spectre686, and, well, a lot of other folks for the tips!

webOS 1.4.0 Doctor released for Pre and Pixi on Sprint, O2, and Verizon

February 28th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

webOS Doctor

Everybody who can get their webOS 1.4.0 jollies on can now also ‘doctor’ their way back to a fresh OS install. Palm has released the webOS 1.4.0 doctors for the Palm Pre and Pixi on Sprint and O2 as well as the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on Verizon. If you’re not familiar with what the Doctor does, here’s a quick brief: the webOS Doctor is a Java-based computer application (works on PC or Mac) that overwrites corrupted or altered OS files with a fresh install of webOS. The Doctor is essentially the last best hope to restore a bricked phone (because of this, webOS phones are near impossible to brick from a software standpoint). While the webOS Doctor will perform a clean install of the OS, newer versions no longer wipe clean any files you have stored on the Media partition, so no worries about destroying those vacation pictures you forgot to backup.

The following webOS Doctors for 1.4 are available (direct download links):

And to go along with all this doctoring fun, the folks at WebOS Internals have whipped up new versions of their Meta-Doctor tool for webOS 1.4 on Sprint and Verizon.

Thanks to Shadow 360 for the tip!

Sprint Updates Buyback Program To Include Over 900 Devices

February 26th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Sprint has updated its buyback program to accept upwards of 900 different wireless devices, regardless of the carrier or manufacturer those devices may have originated from, offering between $5 and $300 in instant account credit for eligible handsets in a bid to drive recovery of handsets sold to 90 percent by 2017.

The Sprint buyback website now has a substantial amount of new additions including the iPhone 3G S 16GB ($213.90 in account credit), the BlackBerry Storm 2 ($131.10 in account credit), and the Motorola Droid ($147.20 in account credit). To sweeten the deal, up to three eligible devices can be cashed in per device purchased.

This is more than just a bid to make the world a greener place – it’s also an ingenious marketing move. Sprint is already known for having some of the cheapest data plans of the big four domestic carriers, and now people looking to move to Sprint for devices like the Pre have even better reason to make the switch: they can cash in their 16GB iPhone 3G for $137.64 in trade-in value, for example, putting the Pre at an attractive $12.35 after rebates.

Sprint quietly lowers the price of the Palm Pixi to $49.99

February 26th 2010 | Posted by WebOsArena

It’s unclear if Palm’s recent announcement about lowering its fiscal year 2010 guidance had a play in Sprint lowering the price of the Palm Pixi to $49.99. Since its release with the number three wireless provider, the Palm Pixi stayed in the $99.99 price boat for a while – it was considered by many to [...]

Sprint forums: webOS 1.4 coming on Friday? Updated x2 with Sprint Pixi Release ‘Date’

February 25th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

In a posting on Sprint’s support discussion boards a Sprint Admin has stated in a rather official tone that webOS 1.4 will be sent out to Sprint Palm Pre and Pixi owners on Friday evening, not today as had been rumored/suspected. Who exactly has their information wrong is unclear, though you know we’re pulling for today and not tomorrow (though in the grand scheme of things it makes little difference). Additionally, there’s a new changelog, which is more or less the same as the one we posted earlier today, with a few small differences. We can also confirm that the 1.4 changelog for Verizon will be the same (with the exception of Sprint-specific updates and fixes). Oh, and those Email and notification enhancements? You’ll soon be able to set your own tones for emails as well as calendar alerts.

Check out the Sprint-posted changelog after the break.

UPDATE: And just like that, the post is gone, removed from the ether that is the intertube. Regardless, we’ve got it all after the break.

UPDATE 2: We’ve received an image from another Sprint source, which is now above. It presents yet another changelog – although the list here pretty much confirms the list below. It also confirms Sprint’s target date for webOS 1.4 on the Pre is tomorrow, February 26th. The screenshot (which is is cropped) also says that the Sprint Palm Pixi will receive its 1.4 update on 2/29/10 – aka a day that doesn’t exist because 2010 isn’t a leap year. As if there weren’t enough twists in this webOS 1.4 release date drama already.  Thanks Anonymous!
