Using the All Inbox email folder

December 20th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Email - All Inbox foldersWith synergy, you can have up to 16 different email accounts loaded in your email account. Each of those inboxes will be displayed individually for you to search through, although by default they will all show up in the "Favorites" section at the top of your main account/folder view. You can use Email folder favorites to add or remove them from the "Favorites" section, and you can also use the "All Inbox" view to consolidate the messages from all your inboxes into one single folder. Keep reading after the break to learn how to set this up

Move calendar entries between accounts

December 2nd 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Calendar Entry -Choose AccountWith Synergy on webOS, you can bring multiple calendars from various sources together and display them all at once, show only certain calendars, or focus on just a single calendar. You can even have more than one calendar for a single source (e.g. multiple personal or shared Google calendars). However, each calendar appointment can only be tied to a single calendar account, which is initially set to your Default Calendar (as determined in the Calendar’s "Preferences & Accounts"). So what happens if you want to create your calendar entry in a different account, or if you want to move an existing entry from one account to another? Simple. Just open up the calendar entry, click on the button in the top right of the screen that indicates the current Calendar account (the "PALM" button in the screenshot above), and select the calendar you want to move the entry to. Once selected, the header of the entry will change colors to match the color of that Calendar Account.

  • Note that all of your calendars may not be shown in the selection drop-down. Only those calendar you have edit-access to will be available.

Set Calendar View Options

November 29th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Synergy is an extremely powerful tool, allowing you to collect and display your calendars from multiple sources in a single view. However, what happens if you don’t want some of your calendars to always display by default, or if you want to change what calendars you see, depending on the day or your location? Luckily, webOS allows you to easily customize your calendar views or decide to just focus on a single calendar.

To choose which calendars show by default (i.e. "All calendars" view):

  1. Calendar View OptionsWhen viewing your calendar, just tap on the button in the top right (the "ALL" button in the screenshot to the right), scroll down to the bottom and select "Calendar View Options"
  2. Or, fr om within the Calendar App, swipe down from the top-left corner to bring down the Calendar Application dropdown menu, select "Preferences & Accounts", and scroll down to the bottom and tap the "Calendar View Options" button.
  3. On the Calendar View Options page, scroll through all you calendars and determine which ones should "Display in All Calendars View"
  • Note that some calendars may not be turned off

If you only ever want to display a single calendar, regardless if it’s included in the "All Calendar view", use that same dropdown from the top-right in the calendar to choose the desired calendar or "All calendars"

webOS 2.0 now backs up Linked Contacts

November 15th 2010 | Posted by Adam Marks

Add An Account

Among the many revolutionary features in webOS 1.0 was Palm Synergy, the ability to pull in contact lists and address books from multiple sources (e.g. Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Facebook, AOL, etc), merge similar records together for the same person, and then display them in a single cleaned-up list on your phone. While there is fairly complex methodology behind the scenes on how these linkages are done, it doesn’t always work the way you would like it to. The good news was that Palm allowed for a way to manual link records together. The bad news was that those linkages were not saved to your Palm Profile, meaning that any manual links did not survive a device swap or a webOS Doctor and you were forced to first try and remember what manual links you made, and then you needed to perform those linkages all over again.

Fast forward to Synergy in webOS 2.0: Palm Synergy is now called HP Synergy. Additional APIs will be available for third-party developers to offer more sync sources to contacts, messaging, and calendar. And according to a recently updated Palm Support page titled "Using Backup", a new section for webOS 2.0 now states that "Linking relationships between contacts" will now be backed up!

Reviewing the rest of the updates did not reveal any other major changes to how the Palm Backup will work in webOS 2.0, and sadly it still clearly states that "There is no online data source or other location from which to view the Palm profile contacts, calendar, tasks, memos, or other items that are backed up to the Palm server". However, here’s hoping that there are more enhancements hidden inside webOS 2.0 for us to find.

Round Table: HP webOS 2.0

November 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Round Table

Welcome to Round Table, which is in fact not a table at all. Round Table is a continuing series on PreCentral where we pose a question to the staff and they provide their thoughts and insights. The question could be something simple like “what’s your favorite use for the Pre’s mirror?” or something a bit more complicated, like “why are you sticking with webOS (or are you)?” Or maybe we’ll just end up discussing our sandwich workflow. Today, however, we’re diving into the latest version of webOS. While few have been able to handle webOS 2.0, the veritable cornucopia of videos, screenshots, and reviews have made it easy to draw some preliminary conclusions. After the break, see what the crew has to say about HP webOS 2.0.

Pre 2 promo video brings the sizzle [video]

October 22nd 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Palm Pre 2 promo video

It’s not an official commercial by any means, but it is a official promo video for the Palm Pre 2, and we like it. With some more people to it to make it more personable and relatable, this could make a decent commercial. Just by virtue of its fast cutting and up-tempo music Palm has made it clear that this sucker is fast. There’s no need for specs here, “fastest” is much easier for customers to understand (when was the last time you heard an iPhone ad touting the clock speed of the A4 processor?).

In just 34 seconds the video manages to round up everything there is to love about HP webOS 2.0: Just Type “to begin just about anything,” multitasking with stacks, Synergy calendars and contacts, notifications, apps (featuring Angry Birds, naturally), and video recording and uploading. Like we said, it’s comprehensive but very clearly gets to the point of reintroducing the public to everything that webOS can do, now "Faster, smarter, and tons of fun." Video after the break.

HP introduces feature-packed webOS 2.0

October 19th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

webOS 2.0 Stacks

webOS is moving up to version 2.0 and bringing along with it a whole host of new features sure to please even the most jaded of webOS users. There’s the stuff that we’ve already covered: card-grouping Stacks, enhanced and more capable Just Type with search and Quick Actions, Exhibition Touchstone dock modes, and expandable Synergy plug-ins.

That’s a lot, but if you ask us, not quite worthy of bringing the big 2.0. Here’s what else Palm didn’t let slip until today:

webOS finally supports Adobe Flash Player 10.1 (beta), and it comes baked right into webOS 2.0. Flash support is limited to the browser, but by and large it’s a rich and fluid experience, and one that we’re glad we can stop wondering if we’ll ever get.

You can now tag contacts as a “favorite.” Doing so has two consequences. One: the contact will show up under the new Favorites view in the Phone app. Two: contacts tagged as such will appear at the top of searches in Contacts, Email, Messaging, and Phone.

As glimpsed in earlier leaks, webOS 2.0 comes along with Text Assist. The new app and service build upon and greatly expand the auto-correction capabilities of webOS, including general spell checking, dictionary customization, and the ability to set your own macros (custom text strings with a short typed trigger).

Skype Mobile is coming to webOS, so long as you’re on Verizon. This leverages that exclusive Verizon deal, so don’t count on seeing Skype calling on any other webOS devices any time soon.

The new Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite is included from the start, displacing DataViz’s abandoned Documents to Go package. But the only thing you’ll get by default in webOS 2.0 is the Quickoffice viewer, which lets you read Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. There’s no editing just yet (we suspect Quickoffice wants to charge for that, which is reasonable, albeit disappointing), but the included app does sync with online services like Google Docs and Dropbox.

The Facebook app is also getting a bump to 2.0, which brings along support for Facebook Chat in Messaging, through the magic of Synergy. The new Facebook app also leverages the other new webOS tools, like Stacks, Quick Actions, and Exhibition.

And that’s just the beginning – explore the world of webOS 2.0 updated features after the break.

HP continues business push for Palm, focusing on the small variety this time

October 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

HP Small Business newsletter

While HP may be the biggest consumer PC seller out there, they’re also tops when it comes to business purchases. We’re talking both big corporate and small shop buys – this is what we in the business refer to as “diversification” and “scale,” wherein HP is capable of selling their products to large and small groups across multiple industries and revenue levels.

With such scale, we’re pleased to see HP using their multitudinous business contacts to push webOS. In fact, not that long ago the HP’s “Small Business Education Series” email newsletter heavily and exclusively featured Palm smartphones. Very smartly, the email focused on the benefits of webOS, noting:

  • webOS multi-tasks like no other. HP was sure to put emphasis on flicking between “apps & docs,” as business users don’t just care about multi-tasking with browsers and games.
  • You can add up to sixteen email accounts. Yeah, we didn’t think about that either, but we can see how some small businesses can have multiple accounts (sales@, support@, admin@, etc) with one person managing them all.
  • Touchstone!
  • Wireless cloud syncing magics, otherwise known as Synergy. No need to plug in, unless you want to transfer files, that is.
  • “Zero-touch IT support,” as in Palm manages for you the security “from the server, to the cloud, to your phone. Simple.” Granted, that’s a big of an over-simplification, but we’ll allow it.

And then there’s noting that every Palm phone, be it a Pre, and Pixi, or a Plus variant of either, is available for free on your choice of major American cellular carriers (excepting T-Mobile, of course). And the oh so lucrative accessories too, like the above mentioned Touchstone charger, fancy colorful backs for the Pixi, and the requisite cables, batteries, and Palm-branded cases. Though we’ll take the opportunity here to point you to our own PreCentral accessory store for that – we’ve got a bit more diversity and scale in that department.

The webOS 2.0 developer opportunity: genuinely unique apps

September 17th 2010 | Posted by Tim Stiffler-Dean

Ed. Note: Give a warm welcome to Tim Stiffler-Dean , aka @anotherguy!

There are a lot of new features in webOS 2.0, enough that it could raise a concern for some developers. With Android and iOS, there’s an app for that. With webOS, it’s already built in.

At least, that’s the sentiment that a lot of people have now that we’ve seen some webOS 2.0 leaks. WebOS is getting a lot of attention from H/Palm to bake some great features right into the next device, but is Palm actually leaving developers out in the cold? Should developers be pumped?

Sync Google custom contact fields with webOS

September 10th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Custom Google Contacts labelsWe’ll be the first to admit that the webOS contacts management system doesn’t provide you with a lot of options for labeling your different fields. For example, the only options for a phone number are Mobile, Home, Work, Fax, and Other. Not exactly the most descriptive if a contact has multiple “work” numbers, plus a personal mobile phone, Google Voice, and maybe a home line as well.

Thankfully, PreCentral reader Kal El on Twitter noticed something pretty slick: the recently-updated desktop/web Google Contacts manager lets you apply custom field labels to pretty much any item, and when you do that with phone numbers and email addresses, they sync just fine to the Synergized contacts on your phone (curiously, Google Voice syncs over as GrandCentral). Even better, the custom labels show up in Universal Search, so you’re that much closer to knowing which number is the right number.

Note: We should point out that this applies only to regular Gmail/Google accounts. Sadly the sweet new Contacts interface has not yet been rolled out to Google Apps accounts.
