HP Veer is the teeny-tiny webOS phone for the young crowd

Hewlett-Packard and Palm just announced their smallest webOS device, the HP Veer. The tiny munchkin has a 2.6″ 320×400 pixels display, plus a small slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
The phone is “about the size of a credit card“, and has a Qualcomm 7230 Snapdragon processor, clocked at 800 MHz. It’s the same one we have in the [...]

Sprint’s CEO sees “logic” in potential LTE-based merger with T-Mobile USA

July 13th 2010 | Posted by Jonathan I Ezor

In an interview with The Financial Times, Dan Hesse, Sprint Nextel’s CEO, discussed the company’s potential adoption of the LTE (for Long Term Evolution) 4G wireless technology for mobile phones. This technology has already been selected by T-Mobile USA (as well as Verizon Wireless and AT&T), although Sprint’s current 4G technology is based on the competing WiMAX standard.

The move toward LTE by Sprint led the Financial Times to ask Hesse about possible merger opportunities for the third (Sprint) and fourth (T-Mobile) largest US carriers. According to the Financial Times piece, "Mr Hesse accepted there was a ‘logic’ to a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile USA if they were both using the same 4G technology, but declined to comment about deal activity." The FT also notes that while Sprint has enough radio spectrum to roll out both 4G technologies, T-Mobile USA may not, further encouraging the merger. (This is quite a different situation from that which we reported last September, when T-Mobile’s parent Deutsche Telecom was considering purchasing Sprint.)

Given that there aren’t any (current) webOS devices using either 4G standard, the implications of this potential technology adoption and merger for the Palm community aren’t clear. Should Sprint switch to LTE, though, it would make the likely 4G hardware path for Palm much clearer, with all four (or three, if the Sprint/T-Mobile merger happens) major US carriers on a single standard, and could even help get webOS devices onto T-Mobile, where they currently don’t yet work officially.

Speed tests: AT&T fastest data, 4G no faster on average

June 4th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Zoom!

With webOS available on three of the four major US carriers, there’s no time like the present to kick some dust around and see who comes out on top. According to PCMag.com’s exhaustive cross-country testing of the Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Cricket, Ma Bell came out on top as far as the nationwide averages are concerned. AT&T also took the speed crown in every region of the US excepting the northeast, where T-Mobile dominated.

While it’s little surprise that AT&T took the crown in 3G testing, the network also bested Sprint’s fledgling 4G network when available. The problem turns out to be the WiMax network’s consistency – while tremendous bursts of speed up to 3.14 MB were observed with 4G, when averaged with PCMag’s consistency scoring Sprint’s 3G network usually proved to be faster and reliable. Of course, we expect that to improve and can remember similar growing pains when 3G EVDO and HSDPA first hit the scene.

Of course, we do have to mention that all that was tested here was data speed (and we’re sure AT&T will be touting the results in ads in no time). Being able to download stuff really fast is great and all, but you should always remember to take the entire package of call quality, dropped calls, signal strength in the areas you frequent, and, of course, whether or not they have webOS phones available, when looking for a carrier.

AT&T Pre Plus: Unlock working, up and running on T-Mobile

May 19th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

Utilizing the nextgenserver SIM unlock method that came about last month, enterprising users have been able to unlock the newly released AT&T Palm Pre Plus and get it up and running on other North American GSM carriers, including T-Mobile and Telus.  Folks interested in getting the the device up and running on T-Mobile will only be able to utilize EDGE, of course, but those using Telus and the like will experience full 3G.

While this method is effective, it isn’t exactly cheap – the phone without contract will set you back about $400, and the unlock service another $37 – but it’s really the best way that those of you who swear by T-Mobile State-side or want to enjoy HSPA up in Canada.

Thanks to Karl for the tip!

According to Advertising Age, Palm has finally decided to fire ad agency Modernista and is currently looking for a new ad house. Modernista was responsible for the awful Palm Pre spots featuring a very pale looking woman. No surprise that the handset, once considered a worthy adversary to the iPhone, ended up selling poorly. Sprint offers 30 day money-back guarantee

March 31st 2010 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

Sprint has announced the "Sprint Free Guarantee," which amounts to a beefed-up 30 day trial program for people looking to switch to Sprint. Essentially, they’re removing as many risks as possible by letting new Sprint users buy a phone and get on their network and if you’re unhappy, you get the following back:

  • The cost of the plan
  • Taxes and fees
  • Activation fee
  • Restocking fee waived
  • Cost of the device
  • Early Termination Fee waived

They’re being a bit more generous than the other big three carriers in the US. As Keith said over at Android Central, it could be read as an attempt to get users to come back before they launch their EVO 4G, but here in Pre land it does make it a little safer for webOS lovers to suggest at least trying the Pre to their friends.

Pre Plus taking on Nexus One in Laptop Magazine’s March Madness [UPDATE: Pre Plus wins!]

March 22nd 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Palm Pre Plus smackdown

UPDATE: The Palm Pre Plus has felled the Nexus One with 56% of the vote. 4317 votes were cast for the flagship webOS device vs. 3397 for the flagship Android phone. The next victim: the BlackBerry Bold 9700 on T-Mobile. Bring it!

While the Sprint Palm Pixi understandably fell to the BlackBerry Bold in the second match of the first round of Laptop Magazine’s 2010 March Madness smartphone showdown, this week is a new week (week #6, to be specific), and we’ve got another Palm webOS phone in the mix. This week, it’s the Palm Pre Plus (on Verizon, naturally) up against Google’s Nexus One, the powerhouse Android phone hailing from the T-Mobile camp.

Does the Pre Plus have what it takes to handle the Nexus One? We like to think so, but the only way to prove it (and show our frienemies at sister site Android Central who’s the boss (hint: us)) is for the voters (you) to put in a ballot in favor of the Pre Plus.

As of this writing the Pre Plus is in the lead, but just barely, with only a few hundred votes cast so far. Added bonus: if the Pre Plus wins, we get the chance to take on the Bold in the semi-semi-finals and avenge the Pixi’s defeat. And the right to gloat over trouncing the flagship Android phone in an all-important online poll (don’t judge; these days we’ll take whatever victories we can get).

Thanks to everybody that sent this in!
