Both Verizon and AT&T have recently dropped the price of their unlimited voice plans from $100 to $70 a month. While we (we being the tech media) generally assumed that the price cuts were an attempt to lure more customers. We tend to forget a few days after their conference calls that the #1 and #2 US cellular networks are having no trouble picking up and retaining new customers, even with their rates considerably higher than #3 Sprint and #4 T-Mobile (T-Mobile is at least still gaining subscribers, unlike Sprint). So why the price cuts?

It’s no secret that the Verizon Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus will be able to use a special Mobile Hotspot application. The application will essentially turn the phone into a MiFi, supporting connections from up to 5 wi-fi devices at once. Wouldn’t it be great to have that on non-Verizon device? With the GSM Pre falling into the hands of anxious Germans as I type, we’ve found out that the Pre in Germany wants to provide support for Bluetooth tethering, at least if you ask the Help app:
Use Phone as Modem
If you use your phone as a modem, you can access the internet with your computer independently from your location as long as you have coverage. Ask your mobile provider whether you can use this function with your contract.
After that are instructions on how to set up your phone and computer for tethering. Unfortunately, it seems that all you get are instructions, as following said instructions and pairing with the computer only gets you the standard bluetooth services we’ve come to know on the Pre. But… it is one more step towards a land of tethering, now all we need is for Palm to flip the metaphorical switch.
Thanks to Carsten for the tip!

One of the things that I dislike most about my iPhone (other than AT&T’s sketchy network) is that you can’t tether the device. Sure Apple offers tethering but AT&T has the feature blocked because they are a-holes. Yeah I said it.
A slick app for the Pre is available called My Tether that allows you to [...]
