Pivotal Labs aware of Tweed media upload problems, fix on the way

July 24th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Tweed Fail

Twitter’s been in a state of near constant flux nowadays, with changes coming one after another, and mostly for the better. One of those for-the-better changes was the addition of OAuth log-in authentication that requires a Twitter user to authorize specific applications to use their accounts, and works through Twitter instead of the client.

For Tweed, that’s posed a slight problem, as with Twitter OAuth they no longer keep the user’s password logged on the device. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, except that as OAuth has moved towards mandatory usage, Tweed’s integration with media upload services like yFrog and TwitVid was broken in the process.

Realizing the error of their not-completely-updated ways, the folks at Pivotal Labs (the people behind Tweed) are finishing up an update to Tweed that will bring OAuth log-in to all of the app as well as fix some other bugs that were introduced with version 1.8.

Your favorite social media apps [PC Brain Trust]

July 15th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

We asked you what your favorite social media application were, and you responded en masse.  Here are the apps that you and your fellow PreCentral readers simply cannot do without in the social media scene:

Facebook for webOS, free:  Developed by Palm’s developer relations team, this Facebook app has seen rapid growth and is well on its way to becoming on of the best on any platform.

Tweed, $2.99:  One of the first and one of the best Twitter apps in the Catalog (and this blogger’s personal favorite), Tweed’s simplicity and speed have a good number of you hooked.

LinkedIn, free:  It’s like Facebook, but exclusively for your professional goings on.  It hasn’t been updated much since hitting the App Catalog last year, but it does the basics and it does them well.

Foursquare, free:  Zhephree’s excellent Foursquare client let’s you "check-in" to venues in style, all while updating your friends on your whereabouts via Twitter and Facebook and competing with them for mayorships at your favorite locals.

Digloo, $1.99:  A great Digg app for webOS that does everything you’d expect Digg to do while mobile: Digg and bury stories and comment, browse individual topics relevant to your interests and other such Digg-ey things.

Tweed 1.5: soon with more video, fewer dollar signs

March 5th 2010 | Posted by Derek Kessler

Tweed VideoComing soon to the webOS App Catalog will be version 1.5 of Pivotal Labs’ popular Twitter client Tweed. As posted on the company blog, Tweed 1.5 will come with integrated TwitVid uploads. It’ll be a beta feature, as webOS in its current form doesn’t have any mechanisms for retrying failed uploads (which can happen with large files like videos over cellular, so Pivotal Labs recommends you do video uploads over Wi-Fi). A demonstration video has been already posted to TwitVid.

Tweed 1.5 will come with a number of other changes and fixes, including updates to the Load More feature, external links, and notifications. Additionally, the price of Tweed is going to be temporarily cut from $2.99 to $0.99. This is due to problems with the free version (Tweed Trial), on which development was stopped with version 0.9.16. Changes made with webOS 1.4 rendered Tweed Trial inoperative, so Pivotal Labs is going to withdraw the app and will temporarily reduce the price of the full Tweed to $0.99 to allow for an easy upgrade path for Tweed Trial users.

Thanks to Bassam and miles4000 for the tips!

Review: Bad Kitty

February 15th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

The developers of Bad Kitty have been teasing us with details of their new Twitter client for a few months now, and my curiosity has been piqued the entire time. The app has finally hit the App Catalog selling for a cool $2.99, and I’ve finally been able to put it to the test. In the ever-growing sea of Twitter applications in the App Catalog, these programs have to have compelling feature sets and an excellent UI to stand out. Does Bad Kitty make the grade?

Best Apps of 2009

December 31st 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

The App Catalog has seen impressive growth since it first went live a little over 6 months ago.  Palm’s Early Access program brought in dozens of developers who have created over 1,000 applications in that time frame, and while we don’t have access to as many apps as other smartphone platforms do, there are a number of high quality ones that fit into all of the important categories.

With that in mind, we’ve created a list of the must have applications that have come our way in 2009.  If you’re new to webOS (you should also see our getting started guide), or have been with the platform for awhile and are unaware of how the Catalog has grown over these last few months, this is a guide for you.

How much is the App Catalog making for developers?

November 20th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

App Catalog

Many developers are hoping to leverage Palm’s webOS App Catalog for financial gain much like has been done on the iPhone App Store. With a significantly smaller install base than the iPhone, webOS developers do have a bit of ways to go to catch up with their iPhone brethren. But let it not be said that it is impossible to make money in the App Catalog.

We at PreCentral were curious how much money has been made from the App Catalog. The App Catalog does not automatically display download counts, even though the information is still available. Thankfully, the folks at WebOS Internals whipped up a patch that makes those numbers visible, and they are telling.

New in the App Catalog for 03 November 2009

November 4th 2009 | Posted by Derek Kessler

App CatalogIf you thought that Monday was a slow app day, whooo boy you’ll be disappointed by yesterday. We got one update. No new apps, not even several updates. Just one. Here we go…

Updated apps:

  • Tweed, $1.99: Adds landscape support and several additional tweaks.

We should also note that FlightView is now charging $4.99 for FlightView (though no features have been updated). Because the app is the "same" version users who downloaded it when it was free will be able to continue using it. Those who got FlightView for free will be able to download future updates at no additional cost (the App Catalog knows you have it and that’s all it cares about).

Palm Sightings: Bones and Shannon Elizabeth

Palm Pre on Bones

The Pre appears to still be making the rounds in Hollywood, this time popping up in last week’s episode of Bones, in the hands of Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (played Emily Deschanel). She must have My Notification installed, because her phone sure didn’t make the familiar “da-ding” when that message came in.
