Application Basics: Another WebOS Webcast with Mitch Allen

September 1st 2009 | Posted by Juventino Quinones

Back in February, there was a webcast for webOS with Mitch Allen, who is vice president and software chief technology officer at Palm, Inc. That webcast was; “Developing Applications for webOS: A Preview”. It was a great opportunity for developers to hear an insider’s perspective on webOS development.

This next webcast is a follow up to [...]

Palm Pre Webcast and Q&A Session Online Now

March 17th 2009 | Posted by Jennifer Chappell

Thanks to Jenn at pocketables for letting us know that the Palm Pre webcast and Q&A session is now available to watch online. The video above is the 11 minute demo. Nice to see the Pre being demoed again. I liked seeing the Pre’s screen turned off at the beginning of this demo. I don’t remember seeing that before. Watching the Pre demo just got my drool glands worked up all over again.

Below is the Q&A session video.

12 questions were addressed in the video, which is actually 12 short videos put together in "playlist" format so you can skip around. One of the questions concerned Sprint’s plans.  Below are the individual plans available for the Pre:

  • $99 Simply Everything
  • $69 Unlimited data + 450 minutes – "Everything Data"
  • $89 Unlimited Data + 900 minutes – "Everything Data"

Also discussed was the Sprint Ready program, which is like a personal trainer at no cost. A Sprint person will go through the phone’s features in the store and make sure that the customer understands them before walking out with the new phone, making sure that you are comfortable with the device.

Other questions addressed (click on each link for individual video):

You can go back and read through Dieter’s live blog of the Webinar and read many comments that were made during the event.  We didn’t learn much of anything new from the webcast, but we did find out that there is a limit to the number of cards you can have open at the same time.  Plus we learned that the Pre’s browser might just be 4 times faster than the iPhone’s.

Palm Pre: 10-minute video clip from Sprint Webcast

March 12th 2009 | Posted by Vincent Nguyen

My Pre managed to snag a 10-minute clip of the Pre being demoed during Sprint’s invite-only webcast earlier today.  Even though Sprint and Palm didn’t reveal price or exact release date, the Palm Pre price plans have been confirmed.  As far as the demo of the Pre goes, there isn’t anything we haven’t seen before [...]

Sprint and Palm webinar about Palm Pre

March 12th 2009 | Posted by Palm Pre Phone

Hey! The live invite-only webcast from Sprint and Palm just started. First words: we’d say nothing about availability (which is sometime during first half of the year) and about pricing … ohh, they’ll just show off how great it is.
Refresh this page, as we’ll put live updates here! Also you can follow us on twitter, [...]

Join us for the Palm Pre Webcast Liveblog

<a href=”http://www.coveritlive.com/mobile.php?option=com_mobile&task=viewaltcast&altcast_code=0d66bbae8e” >Palm Pre Webcast</a>

Update: Liveblog over — news was, well, mostly rehashing how awesome Sprint is and how awesome the Pre will be on Sprint for Sprint’s investors.  Remember, in this partnership, Palm’s not the only company teetering on the edge.

You can see all the slides from the event after the break!

We told it you was coming, well now the Sprint/Palm combined webcast is nearly upon us, happening on the 12th at 2pm Eastern. The webcast is invite only, but we’ll be there and will bring you what news there is live on this very page.

We’ll start the festivities 15 minutes before, you can comment above (no need to reload the page), and it should be pre-tty exciting for PreFects.   Frankly, we’re not entirely sure that we will see new information here, but then again, it’s not as if the people who will be attending this webcast don’t already know all that there is to know, so it’s possible we might get some more new-ness — that’s certainly the hope in our Palm Pre forums.

On the ‘cast will be David Owens, Director of Consumer Acquisition for Sprint, and Matt Crowley, Product Line Manager at Palm.

Update: It suddenly occurs to me to mention that there will be a Q&A section to the webcast.  Got an idea for a question, let us know in the comments now!

Palm Pre: Sprint invited “me” to an exclusive viewing

March 4th 2009 | Posted by Vincent Nguyen

It’s hard to say how much more of an exclusive viewing there is to be had on the Palm Pre other than Palm and Sprint announcing the release date.  Anyways, this email just dropped in my inbox with the following content:

WebOS WebCast Online, Unofficial Tutorials Arise

February 28th 2009 | Posted by Jason Robitaille

Missed the O’Reilly webOS webcast or just want to watch it again? You’re in luck!  The whopping webcast, over 56min long, has been uploaded (youtube here).  PreCentral covered the event and while most of the presentation was known information, the Q&A session afterwards revealed some interesting details.

WebOSHelp also covered the event and in the first part of their coverage they’ve highlighted some of more interesting and base information for the WebOS.  They’ve also created a quick-list of what was said during the Q&A session (handy if you don’t want to sit through an hour-long video):

  • They would not comment on the release date for the SDK or the Pre.
  • They expect to see a fair amount of games on the platform. Right now, web-based games will be most suitable; other games (that need deeper access to the hardware) will come later.
  • When asked if "connected" apps will run when no connection is available, they should. Apps are designed with storage functions so even web apps will have storage functions and be able to cache and load data, rather than just displaying a blank page.
  • Headless apps are not limited other than the fact that they have no associated card. They operate in the dashboard panel, and technically can be as functional as a card app.
  • The app catalog was mostly under wraps, but will be the primary way to get apps at launch.
  • The ability to build apps will not be operating-system specific. The tools in the Mojo SDK will be supported on Mac, Linux and Windows.
  • Performance is of primary concern, and once the device has been released, perfomance should be just as good as the pre-release demos from CES and the MWC.
  • They are not commenting on how fullscreen will be implemented in 3rd party apps (currently the pic viewer and video player will support this feature), but they stated it was important, and will be looked into. They noted that window sizing will be handled at the system level.

WebOSHelp has gone a step farther and based on existing information, combined with new information from this webcast, they’ve pulled together some links to informative HTML/CSS/JS tutorials, ordered by difficulty: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  There’s even a special tutorial designed for HTML5 data storage and a page devoted to Prototype resources. For those unaware, Prototype is a javascript framework that Palm will be bundling with their upcoming developer tools and was used to help create many of the built-in application on the Pre.

Now we just need the SDK.  Palm, you’re such a tease.
