Review: BlogBooster

August 6th 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

We’ve all been there: you’re out and about, the only web-connected device you have access to is your phone, a wave of inspiration hits and you need to update your blog now. Some services offer an optimized for mobile web portal, but none of them are as useful as a native app. We’ve taken a look at the excellent Poster before, and now there’s a new kid on the block: BlogBooster, which is currently selling for $4.99 in the App Catalog. How does it stack up to the services integration of Poster and the word processing abilities of Scratch? Read on after the break to find out.

Quick App: Scratch

April 23rd 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

There’s a real vacuum when it comes to document editing software in the App Catalog (we’re looking at you, Dataviz). Sure, Google Docs allows you to do some basic editing to spreadsheet documents via the Web using Google Docs, and there are some rudimentary text editing programs available to webOS users, but until Scratch ($5.00 in the App Catalog) came along, there hasn’t been a way to edit text documents with rich markup while also smartly utilizing the cloud.

Scratch is a word editing program that offers full document editing with a wide array of text formatting options. In addition to supporting true paragraphs, Scratch allows you to bold, italicize and underline text as you’d expect, and you can format blocks of text with bulleted lists, numbered lists, and heading sizes. Enhancing this feature set, nearly every formatting option has a keyboard shortcut associated with it (gesture area + L will, for example, create a bullet list from selected text), allowing for surprisingly efficient document editing. There’s no question that the $5 asking price is a tad steep for those features alone, and the program sweetens the pot by adding the ability to import and export text documents directly from Google Docs.

This program is solid enough in its own right, but what would make this blogger especially giddy? If the folks behind Scratch and the folks behind the Wordpress oriented app Poster combined forces and, with a little bit of PDK magic, created one of the more robust cloud oriented pieces of content creation software available to any mobile platform.   Think about it, guys.

Wordpress Blogging App Coming to webOS

December 7th 2009 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

Bloggers of the world: rejoice! webOS is slowly catching up to other platforms in the app category and we have another one to tick off: a full-fledged Wordpress blogging app.  The app will come from Keen Studios, a shift from their previous efforts with games like Checkers and Perfect Bounce.

The Wordpress app will allow you to post blogs, edit them, view other members, etc.  Some of the functionality will require a plugin called "WPre," so it will do a bit more than your average webOS app can.

Keen tells us they’re pushing hard to get the app released in Beta form ASAP. A few more screenshots after the break

If you own a Pre and have a WordPress blog, now you’ll be able to manage your blog on the go. Alex King, who designs and develops custom WordPress themes and plugins, has just released WordPress Mobile Edition 3.0.5.

This new version adds support for the Palm Pre (and other Palm webOS devices). Version 3.0.5 also added the Palm Pre as a touch device and fixed a CSS bug that was referencing a non-existent image. Plus a new version of Carrington Mobile is included as well.

Head on over to the WordPress Plugins page to get the download and more info.
