September 22nd 2010 | Posted by mrkalel

You know and love @MrKal_El on Twitter, now know and love him here as he gives us a rundown of restaurant apps on webOS!

Who doesn’t like going out to restaurants? But we can all use some help finding where to go and what’s good, especially when traveling. For those who know me on Twitter: I love food and travel. One of my favorite things to do involves going out to try new and exciting restaurants. As a launch day webOS user, some of the first apps I downloaded dealt with finding great new places to go to. After the break I’ll walk you guys through the apps I typically use on my webOS device to help me accomplish this. This guide is great for local use or when traveling. Hopefully it will help any foodie or casual diner out there find interesting and unique eats.

Your Favorite Travel Apps [PC Brain Trust]

June 1st 2010 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

We asked you what your favorite travel apps were, and you weighed in.  Here’s what the PreCentral readership can’t do without on their travels:

  • Flightview, $4.99: Flightview gives you real-time flight information that you can act on. Track upcoming and in-air flights, use the air map to see flight progress, save flights, and get notifications when a flight’s status changes.
  • Sprint Navigation (TeleNav), Free on Sprint and available for a monthly fee on other carriers: TeleNav’s excellent turn-by-turn GPS navigation program for webOS.
  • Where: Where is a location aware program that enables you to quickly access local information, including: including weather, news, gas prices, movies and much more.
  • The Weather Channel: One of the more popular (and free!) weather applications available to webOS users, The Weather Channel lets users browse interactive radar and satellite maps, check current coditions and hourly forecasts, and check out 36-hour and 10-day forecasts.
  • Yelp: This app’s implementation on webOS is as effective as it is simple. Using the on-board GPS, Yelp for webOS allows you to search nearby restaurant, bar and shop listings while on the go.
  • DrPodder, $0.99: Travelling would be a bore without your favorite podcasts in tow, and this long-time homebrew favorite turned App Catalog success story lets you manage them in style

Best Apps of 2009

December 31st 2009 | Posted by Robert Werlinger

The App Catalog has seen impressive growth since it first went live a little over 6 months ago.  Palm’s Early Access program brought in dozens of developers who have created over 1,000 applications in that time frame, and while we don’t have access to as many apps as other smartphone platforms do, there are a number of high quality ones that fit into all of the important categories.

With that in mind, we’ve created a list of the must have applications that have come our way in 2009.  If you’re new to webOS (you should also see our getting started guide), or have been with the platform for awhile and are unaware of how the Catalog has grown over these last few months, this is a guide for you.

Four More Apps Hit the Official App Catalog, Homebrew

August 27th 2009 | Posted by Dieter Bohn

We have four more apps in the App Catalog, bringing the total available up to 45.  What’s new?

  • Yelp: It’s probably the most popular of the YARFs (Yet Another Restaurant Finder)
  • Yahtzee Demo: We have a feeling these "demo" apps are going to be more common as we approach the ability to buy apps from the App Catalog in September
  • Tetris Mania Demo: this app comes by way of Electronic Arts (and we’re pleased as punch to see them in the App Catalog).  We have to admit, though, that we’re partial to elchileno’s BlockDrop in our Homebrew Apps Gallery, which packs in great features and is a full meg smaller
  • The Canadian Press Mobile: Just in time for the Bell Launch of the Palm Pre – get your Canadian News on.

Meanwhile, we hit a significant milestone in our Homebrew App Gallery yesterday.  We’ve been open for business for a few weeks now, but only started counting downloads last week.  In one week, our members have logged over Homebrew App 500,000 downloads.

Thanks to sburlbaw for the tip!
